Hi Dreamer, what you described sounds like social anxiety. It's common in alot of people. Are you able to seek counseling to take steps on overcoming your anxiety? I gotta tell ya, alot of people feel the same as you. As if they have nothing worthwhile to say. Sometimes you are actually concentrating so hard on something good to say that you lose focus on the conversation. I wish you the best. Is there anyone you can personally talk to about this. It's helped me to talk with others who could relate to me about this.

Buttafly gave you excellent advice.

it does sound like social anxiety. I struggle with the same thing. I often feel extremely anxious at parties and social gatherings, like how do I possibly break into this group of people? What can I say to them?

I find small talk very difficult. I can talk about major life things and I'm a great listener, but just talking about whatever is really hard.

I found what helped me is to do a lot of things that alleviate anxiety. I do a TON of excercise and I cut back on caffeine in my diet. I also went to a therapist for quite a long time. I never went on any medication, but it does help some people who have very extreme anxiety.

Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Being tired can make anxiety worse.

ALso, you have to practice changing what you say to yourself in your own head. If you call yourself stupid or lame or boring all the time, you will only feel worse. Try using positive statements when you catch yourself feeling bad about yourself.

Say things to yourself like

Well, I do feel nervous but I'm going to try and ask three different people about themselves at this party.

Probably one out of the three will want to have a conversation with you.

Even if its nerve-racking, try to make eye contact with people when they talk to you. Eye contact makes you appear warmer and friendlier.

Try to involve yourself in things that force you to interact with people. Do volunteer work or offer to help people with projects at your job.

If you need therapy, do it! It can really help

Thank you buttafly for your advice and thank you guest.i might suffer from social anxiety,i'll try to read more about it, but my weak memory complicates the problem.i forget what i read or hear, even in my work sometimes my boss aks me about things i did some days before , but i fail to remember , also i forget the names of pepole i meet, and the most difficult thing is to remeber numbers.

Your memory loss might also be a degree of ADD. I have lesser case of it and often I forget numbers to locks, names of streets and people, and remembering subjects in classes.

I read a little about ADD and maybe I have some of the symptoms(such as difficulty of abstract thinking and doing mental arithmetic) but I wonder if ADD can affect the memory and how it can be treated.

Have you always been this way or has it happened over time?

I knew a woman who contracted Lyme Disease (comes from ticks). It wasn't caught for many years. Over time, she developed extreme fatigue and short memory loss. No one figured out what was wrong until her whole body began to ache and they tested her for Lyme's.

She mostly recovered but says her ability to concentrate and remember things is still affected.
