Wellbutrin/zyban - need experienced input!

Hi,

Four days ago, I began taking Wellbutrin, 150 mg day to quit smoking and to help with a situational depression. It seemed like such a good combo - deal with two problems with one pill. You must understand that I am very anti-meds for ME...usually take the natural approach (which is weird that I ever starting smoking in the first place). Anyway, I'm not sure I'm liking how I'm feeling. Already, I feel sort of foggy and definitely have noticed sweating/hot flashes. I would like to just stop taking it, but will deal with symptoms if it means quitting smoking. I've been smoking for 3 years usually around 1/2 pack a day. Since my relationship situation, I'm up to one pack (sometimes a few exta cigs than that even). My body feels like sh*t as a result. I want to stop, but feel I need help to do so during this bad relationship break-up time.

Have any of you quit smoking using this med? How long did it take? Symptoms? Thanks for any input!

It sounds more like cold turkey to me but I don't smoke.

That said, most meds usually settle down after around a week to 10 days but you should call either your Doc or Pharmacist to be sure. You shouldn't ever seek medical advice from a posting forum.

If you are getting a reaction from a medicine, you should consult your doctor.

He/she may have an alternative approach.

Thanks. However, I wasn't necessarily seeking input on my reactions to this medicine....everybody's reactions are different anyway. I am seeking input on if anyone actually quit smoking this way? And, if so, how long on the drug until they quit?

I did wellbutrin to quit smoking when I was 20. I had been smoking since I was 14, off and on, but got into it regularly around 18 when I could buy my own smoked.

My experience? It made me grossed out to smoke a cigarette, but I still wanted to smoke. So I would want one, light it up, gag on it and put it out.

I probably quit smoking for about a year that time but I started again and am now trying to quit using the gum. For the second time.

Wellbutrin didn't really work for me.

Well, it kind of worked, didn't it? You quit smoking for a year! That was good. Do you recall how long you were on it before you quit?

It took about 2/3 months.

It kind of worked but not really. I still WANTED to smoke, but it was like I got nauseous every time I tried. So it was really just agonizing and frustrating. I've had more success qith cold turkey or the patch. Which I think I might go back to because the nictotine gum makes my gums sensitive.

Don't really have an answer for you on the wellbutrin aspect, but I quit smoking 2.5 years ago when my son was born. Did it cold turkey. IMO it is the only way to do it. You have to ride out the cravings. They come in waves. Once you get through the first three months it is a piece of cake. The first three weeks is the worst then it levels off then around month three they come back with a vengence. Thats when most people start up again. If you can get passed month three cold turkey, you can do it for life. I still get cravings once in a blue moon, but they are very fleeting and pass as quickly as they come.

hope this helps.
