ShoeGirl
I have recently been put in an awkward position by my parents. They have been divorced since I was 4 (I am now 20). A little background... my dad remarried almost 10 years ago and my mom remarried 4 years ago. I grew up living with my mom and visiting my dad every other weekend, until he remarried and moved several hours away. When I got into high school I got a job and was playing school sports so I didn't make it to my dads very often (maybe 4-5 times a year). As part of their divorce they agreed to pay for my younger brother and I to get through college... they were to have the court determine the contributions of each parent and the amount that I would have to pay. My first year of college the court ordered my dad to pay $700/month and my mom to pay $300 toward my education. (I go to a private school which they both were fine with when I made that decision) I made it through that year barely. They went back to court when my dad thought that he was paying too much. In the end he was ordered to pay 70% (= to $1700/month) of my college costs and my mom to pay 30%. My dad continued to pay the $700/month with no explanation. He claims that he cannot afford it (by looking at his lifestyle you would not believe that statement.) It has recently gotten to the point where he has given me an ultimatum... either sign a document stating that we have an agreement for him to repay me (which we don't and he won't discuss what his plans are) or "our relationship will change drastically." Of the two I would go with the second... however that will only lead to my brother hating me because of that (my dad will not tell him the real reasons and he won't believe me.) I have been looking for someone to help but there is nothing out there that I can afford. My question is, what can I do so that I don't get some part of my family mad at me? Anyone else dealt with something similar? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Sorry for the long post!
