Is Hollywood Right?

Recommended Posts

Does a woman have to be Paris Hilton skinny to be sexy? I know Hollywood portrays sexiness as nearly bone thin, but I would like to know what real men think. Would you prefer your SO to be uber thin? average? thick? curvey? voluptuous? And what is your definition of sexy? Can anybody be sexy, no matter their size?

Heck no!!! (And personally, I think Paris Hilton is one ugly little girl.)

What's sexy to me as far as a woman's body goes? The best word is "cuddly." I don't like skinny, I don't care for "hard bodies" either. Physically strong is great, as long as they're fun to cuddle too. On the other hand, I wouldn't want a woman to be so large she has trouble getting around, or gets winded going up a few flights of stairs.

Is Hollywood Right?

Of course not.

Can anybody be sexy, no matter their size?

Of course they can. Different strokes for different folks.

Screw Hollywood.

instead of reflecting public society, in some instances, it tries to establish it. Skeleton-thin women aren't the average American woman, who I once read was a healthy size 12. But damned media (advertising, movies, magazines) would have you believe otherwise.

I do believe that every woman – despite her looks and size – has it in her to be incredibly sexy. She need only tap into it.

go read "Phenomenal Woman," a poem by Maya Angelou. THAT is what sexy is about. Not a port-starlet, not a freakin' skeleton girl or those chicks who look like ET with their bellies sticking out because they think they're so sexy wearing low-riding pants/shorts (muffin-top anyone?). Frankly, I think that look distracts from a woman's sexy factor and makes her look like a two-bit ho looking for the quickest way to raise a little spending money – there's no sublety involved.

<end rant>

Have any of you seen the video of the lingerie clad obese woman lip synching Kelis- Milkshake? Talk about sexy

Queenbee- Can I ask why you are asking this question? Is it just a general census collection or are you having some issues with self image?

I personally don't mind how Paris Hilton looks, but as soon as she opens her yap I want to run screaming in the other direction.

Models are all the same size and shape simply because that makes it easier for them to model. There's no fumbling in the dressing room for different sizes of clothes.

But to the question: is Hollywood right?

On one hand, the celebrity industry will only create an image when there's a market for it. So if there's a market for one particular body type, then the industry will use that to it's advantage to make money.

On the other hand, what may start as an image-building machine to generate profits can evolve - or devolve, depending on how you look at it - into a process which creates trends, rather than reflects them.

Whether it's right or wrong is, I suppose, entirely dependent on the observer. I personally don't find heaviness attractive in men or women, but bone-thin is a turnoff too.

I like svelte. Svelte is good.

Of course Hollywood is wrong. Otherwise Chubby Chasers wouldn't exist now would they! :D

Sexy is most often the right amount of confidence. :)

Of course Hollywood is wrong. Fashion designers too have no clue what sexy is. Most of them are gay men anyway. What the hell do they know about what "regular guys" like when it comes to women. I like a woman with meat on her bones. Somethin' to grab onto and ride.

Models are models because theyhave distorted bodies that allow a wide variety of clothing to "hang" properly on their bodies, whereas those of us with more realistic physiques (like super short little ol' me) have to pick out particular types of clothing in order to suit our body types.

I've never met anyone that took this unrealistic ideal as gospel.

That isn't actually true. Most fashion houses fit and pin their clothing to individual models.

Modelling was a huge part of my life, so I will try to avoid commenting on this anti-barbie thread.

Oh god, Paris Hilton makes me want to puke. We're always being told what to find sexy and it's always wrong. I've dated girls of all shapes and sizes and they were all sexy to me in their own way.

What's "anti-barbie" about it? Simple fact is that ladies come in all shapes and sizes, and men's tastes are quite varied too.

Hollywood, for that matter, changes its taste. Marilyn Monroe wasn't exactly a skinny little thing.

Side note; "Jaws" was on a few weeks ago. It was actually striking that they had ordinary looking people in the beach scenes! Yes, there were babes, but there were also wrinkled old men, middle-aged women with cellulite (sp?) etc.

That's the stupid thing about designers - they design so that the clothes look good on the models. Then when they have to shorten the styles and make them bigger to account for multiple sizes of the women who actually wear them, the clothes end up looking all wrong...pockets end up being in the wrong place, pleats don't fall right, shortening a hemline makes the skirt lose its intended shape and drape, collars are too wide or too skinney, and buttons and seams on blouses hit at the wrong place.

I wish they'd actually use a variety of size models when they design the clothes in the first place so the clothes look good on them instead of the clothes hanger.

I was referring to live runway models, I know a couple and that's what they told me. Sorta makes sense when the model in question has maybe a minute to change from one outfit to another, and there just isn't time to rifle through racks of clothes to get the right size and fit.

Of course, modelling for a magazine or a photo spread may be different; I can't speak for that.

I think models are beautiful. I think Paris Hilton, although annoying, in beautiful. People crack down on her because she is thin and glamoures but she can be.

I think people can be beautiful not matter what size they are, whether it be a 2 or a 12.

I am honestly not jealous of normal models, i am SOOO jealous of women that are in like Maxim magazine because they look fabulous in there little undies and bras whereas i have like no breasts.

Anyway, i think everyone can be beautiful and it has to do with how you present yourself. I am sick of hearing people who are unhappy and insecure talk about how those gorgeous women arent just because they are jealous.

Yeah there the typical beautiful girls but you don't have to look like them to be sexy or beautiful. Beauty is also runs skin deep

but don't try to get your self all tan loose all this weight because you feel you need that to be beautiful. Sure a nice tan helps and shedding some pounds but jesus some girls looked way better before they ended up looking anorexice and burnt to a crisp

as pink said dont be a stupid girl. :)

Hey ...I'm that freakish type and use to hate it. Tall and thin doesn't work in the real world only modeling world.

Ewww I don't think I would of picked Paris Hilton for a example. She reminds me of Nellie Olson off of Little House on the Prairie. I think if she wasn't rich she would not even be a part of Hollywood at all.

I've said this before in another post. In todays standards Marilyn Monroe would be considered plump. I think she's beautiful and I would love to have her body. I guess you always want what you can't have though. I have what you call boy hips. It's funny though my sisters have real nice shapes, well I have nice shape it's just different than theirs. They are curvy, I'm a rail.

All and all though every guy girl has their own idea of beauty so Hollywood really doesn't have anything to do with it.

Bodies come in all shapes and sizes, thin, thick, short, tall, angular, curvy. IMO it's not necessarily the body, but the shape it's in that I find attractive. Now I'm not saying that it's gotta be a buff and toned or anything like that, just that it needs to be natural. I believe that the body can be a reflection of the heart.

Ok, if I see a grossly obese person, I am turned off because in my mind, this person obviously does not care one whit about their appearance (I can understand medical issues, but not voluntary obesity). The way I see it, that person is obsessed with the immediate satisfaction of stuffing their face and it is that type of selfish obsession that is repugnant. (Gluttony)

The same goes for the really skinny ones. You know, the ones who are on a perma-diet. You might as well plan your dates around the salad menu of the resturants, because that's all she's going to be having. The one who makes you feel guilty for bringing chocolates, and is always complaining about her weight (like every time you talk to them) In this case, I see the selfishness as the need to be adored, accepted, idolized or desired by large numbers of people. (Vanity). Again, I understand and sympathize that Anorexia is a very real medical condition.

I personally like curvy women (think Catherine Zeta Jones), but physical appearance to me is probably the least most important thing in a woman. I've dated both thick and thin. I've acutally had more fun with the slightly thicker ones, as they seem to be the least inhibited and most real.

Most catwalk models look alot of the same...I find myself looking at them thinking not "Yuck" but "Interesting"...they get chosen to be models by different designers based on what look that designer is looking for.

Kate Moss, some would say she's ugly, me I say she's not ugly, but I wouldn't look at her and say "Wow, she's beautiful"...she's just...different.

Then you have models like Megan Gale. Don't know if you guys over in the US have heard about her, she's an Australian model and she is without a doubt the most naturally stunning lady. She also has that sex appeal about her, too.

Same with Jennifer Hawkins, our Miss Universe last year. Very attractive and very sexy.

Hollywood does place alot of emphasis and somewhat brainwashing affect on us on what's hot and what's not. I tend to disregard it...

The only girl I find myself mesmerised by is the beautiful Mischa Barton. Also, some would say she isn't attractive, but others would say she is stunning.

Any magazine that has her on it, I will pick up and read.

But all in all, sexiness is based on the viewer. Some people will see some as sexy, while others won't.

I agree! She is one classy dame. My BF has a big thing for Bettie Paige. He has told me time and again that he likes women with curves.
