luvtoto
My receptionist stabbed me in the back again! I am getting sick of her! My daughter just had surgery yesterday on both knees. I have no family. So, I have to get help where I can. I called work and talked to one of my *other* friends to help me pick up my daughter's prescription for me. I didn't want the pharmacy to close before I got home from the city with my daughter. Well,...guess which one of my co-workers volunteered to pick up my prescription???? My receptionist. What the hell was I supposed to say? Um, I don't want *her* help! When we got home, it was after hours, but she ran the pills over to my house. She was being very helpful and had a gift for my daughter, along with some other ones from my other co-workers. I needed help getting my daughter in the house. Well, it's 4:00am, and I am up giving my daughter her meds, and I decide 'what the hell' I am going to count the pills. I s*** you not! SIX of my daughter's pain pills are GONE!  This s*** is getting personal now! I dug the bag out of the trash. I found out that eventhough the bag had a staple on top, I could still get the pill bottle out. I am furious!!!! How do you confront a person about this? Everybody at my work, tolerates her...why shouldn't I? If I say something, I am going to look like the ass...not her. Oh, yea...on top of everything, my boss asked her to work for me these next couple days to cover. My receptionist told me that when she went to lunch there was a $20 bill in the register, then when she came back, it was gone. She doesn't know what happened. She just thought she was being helpful and productive by telling me this. Trying to get herself off the hook. Nobody else steals at my work. We've never had problems until she was hired. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!
superconductor
Fire her a$$. End of discussion.
a4a
If she indeed did this and stole money on previous occassions I guess your wallet is next. Find a way to get the hell rid of her. ASAP
RecordProducer
She knows you saw her once and yet continues. She is obviously a cleptomaniac. You need to report her to the boss. You caught her, not once but THREE times. Don't underestimate your words! You'd be surprised how they will fire her without even checking your information. I've always thought that my word against someone means nothing. Once I told my new cosmetician that her employee did a bad job on me and was rude to me and actually knew it, because when I told her I was two months pregnant, she apologized to me for "torturing" me. I found out later that she immediately fired both her assistents and started working alone. She remained my cosmetician for several years. Another person told me to never report an employee unless I want to see them fired. When I was doing singing gigs, a waiter at a club felt like bullying me over and over again. Finally I reported him to the owner of the club and he got fired with no further questions asked. Sounds rather scary, but when someone has a job position that anyone can perform, they can't afford to make mistakes.
blind_otter
She knows you saw her once and yet continues. She is obviously a cleptomaniac. . Um, no. She's an addict, quite obviously. She steals money to buy her pain pills illegally, either online or from dealers, and she also probably steals pain pills from family members or friends. These types of people will go over to your house and use the bathroom just to look through your medicine cabinet. Confronting her won't help. Fire her, and move on.

HokeyReligions
Call the pharmacy and verify how many pills were in the bottle. It will say on the bottle, but verify it with the pharmacy. Keep the bag too so you can demonstrate how easy it is to get the bottle out even with it stapled. Go to the boss and tell him that you are going to file a police report and explain why. Then do it. If the boss gives you any hassle you will have a statement from the pharmacy and from the police to back you up. Go through your posts here and write down exactly what and when each of these things have happened. The owner of your company will be liable if he doesn't do something and if he doesn't know that, he will when the police question him about the receptionist.
Asafan
I gotta agree with Hokey on this one. It is time for the police to be involved. This woman sounds very shady to say the least. Next it WILL be your purse. I find the whole thing very strange be she an addict, clepto or whatever.

Next it WILL be your purse. I find the whole thing very strange be she an addict, clepto or whatever. I don't. I'm a recovering addict. I myself never stole, I just ran my trust fund dry over the course ofabout 5 years. But I knew many, many, many people who were like this. Mostly it was women -- the male addicts would do more overt stuff like mug people or steal electronic equipment or car accessories and sell them. But the females would do stuff liek steal from work, or steal from friends. I had a roommate who stole from me. That's how addicts are. It's just the way it is.

I understand she is an addict and you never engaged in criminal activity while you were an addict, but if she is/ has been stealing -- anything from anybody -- why shouldn't the fuzz be involved? Just want to understand yer reasoning. If it has to do with the whole addiction is a disease thing, I totally agree. I have and have had my own share to be sure, but shouldn't there be some accountability for anyone who commits chronic crimes?

What Hokey said is the only way to go. What she did is bullcrap and she needs to suffer the consquences of her actions. To take pain meds from a child who needs it after surgery is just so wrong! This soon-to-be-GONE receptionist needs some therapy!

Fun2BMe
I know a girl who keeps taking her children to the doctor so he could prescribe medications. She herself goes for "pain" to get painkillers. She was at my house last week, I just wanted to see her so I could see her children. The whole time she was asking me for vicodin as if I'm some pharmacy. She kept complaining about her backpain (she is in her 20s). When she used my bathroom I could hear that she opened my medicine cabinet which only has vitamins and other things, not medications. Then before she left she asked to "borrow" many items, ranging from a light bulb to toilet paper. She makes a good living but I guess a lot of it goes to drugs. I feel sorry for her children so I gave her what she needed. I would never imagine anyone hiring her to work behind a cash register or ever asking her to pick up my medication from the pharmacy! You have to be strong and speak up NOW before something worse happens. What if she tries to break into your house when you're not home to steal meds? Get her out of your life and out of your workplace. Since you have children and she's a druggie, it might not be worth calling the police for the sake of your security. She could go nutso and do something stupid in retaliation.

MrsHellFire
Honestly, it is probably a pharmacy problem. Many times I will count my pills that I get from the pharmacy and there usually is not the right amount. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Usually more though. I think you are too paranoid with this woman and just have your mind set against this woman. Sorry, I saw that this has happened a number of times. So I might be wrong. But the abuse of prescription drugs is seriously becoming an epidemic and this is the first time I've heard of someone other than relatives getting involved in this type of abuse. There's so much talk about weed and heroine etc, but not much about the problems with addiction to prescriptions!
littlekitty
It is worth noting that often prescription pills are weighed out, not counted. So a busy place could make a small mistake/miscalculation on the weight/number.
Author luvtoto
Thank you everyone for all your advice. I appreciate it. From what I hear, my receptionist was really loopy on Thurs. & Friday. That a sure sign that she was all doped up. I told my boss what happened. He seemed shocked by her actions, but said he couldn't get involved. As far as firing her. I do not have the authority to do that. My boss does. All I can do is keep telling him the issues I am having with her. He won't fire her. So, I might as well get used to her crap. That means he will have to pay unemployment. I told on Fri. morning, when I stopped in at work, that my pharmacist shorted me 6 pills...how odd, I said. I waited for her reaction. She didn't comment at all. She was just quiet. I am going back to work this morning. I don't even want to be near that chick!

superconductor
I told my boss what happened. He seemed shocked by her actions, but said he couldn't get involved. An employee has been caught repeatedly stealing stuff and your boss won't get involved? File a police report. Seriously. This woman needs a severe wake-up call. You CANNOT allow this to continue, because inaction on the part of your boss or yourself is tantamount to condoning her actions. If she has no negative result to her thievery, she'll continue to steal. Just walking away and staying clear of her is not an option. You're into this whether you like it or not - so is your boss - and though it sucks, I don't really see that you have much choice.
Author luvtoto
File a police report. Seriously. This woman needs a severe wake-up call. I hear ya, SC. But, there is too much reasonable-doubt in the case. Could've been the pharmacy's mistake. HIGHLY unlikely though! As far as the money situation at work, I have to authority to fire her or press charges. I AM her supervisor, just not her employer.

To keep from having this turn into a personal matter can you not start to do the employee disipline route? Write her up after every shortage, if tardy,.... that way it is indeed documented? Would put a screeching halt to her filing a suit for wrongful dismissal or for unemployment post termination.

I am on the verge of depression from this whole mess. I am too damn much of a chicken-**** to do anything against this woman. But, so is my boss. I am a coward. period. In the entire existence of this company, only one person has ever been fired, so I've heard. My employer's style is to make their life hell till they quit on their own. I've seen it happen. I think he just feels sorry for her... like she has a disease that can't be helped.
