Damn, Pilates is hard!

Recommended Posts

I have been a dancer for as long as I can remember and I was recently added to a line up of belly dancing with a modern hip hop edge. They call it burlesque dancing (think pussycat dolls) anyway, I am loving it!

As the dance term goes on, we are preparing for the end of year theatre performance... and we are now doing thirty minutes of pilates four times a week.

When I first heard this I thought... excellent, I can handle it (As well as dancing, I do a lot of aerobic activities... climbing and running is about the only resistance training) well, it turns out, I can't handle it.

The woman that teaches us is hardcore pilates... OMG, aftwards, I literally have trouble getting out of my car.

My whole body ACHES.

I thought I was fit, turns out pilates is kicking my ass :lmao:

So to all you pilate men and women out there... I am in awe!!!

Haha wow. I will know to just grab my sh*t and run if she ever brings out the big wide elastic thing

How long have you been doing it? Seeing results?

I am not really in to "classes", I prefer fun activities, like dancing, climbing, blading, and running. Because I actually enjoy them!

Hey Pink! My mom is a Pilates instructor so I've been doing it quite a while. And she has a very heavy aerobic background so she does a very intense pilates routine. I love it though! And i agree, I don't normally like class settings, but I enjoy doing this so much it doesn't matter. And yes, in the beginning I thought she was a nut and told her I wasn't going to do those things to my body, but she convinced me to keep it up and I can't believe how good it feels. As simple as I'm NEVER sore anymore. From anything: overdoing it in the gym, sleeping funny, NOTHING. That's probably my biggest thing. But yes, you can actually watch yourself build muscle when you thought you didn't need to, you can see your muscles getting lean and long and 'dancer-ish' which should help you in your dancing A LOT! I'd say keep it up and you'll see within a few classes that it gets easier and starts helping you out in other aspects! GOOD LUCK TO YOU! :)

Thanks gorgeous!

You are lucky to have a mother with that kind of dedication!

Apparently pilates started as a routine to help with flexibility and body movement in dancing, so I can only assume this is why we are doing this as much as the dancing!

I am so glad to hear it gets easier! Lengthening of muscles is very important. I guess it will help me with my climbing too!

I don't know what it is, but I've done cardio with weights. Lemme tell you, that's the hardest thing I've ever done.

Well I have climbed 200 meters of sheer ice, in a blizzard, and this pilates is just as taxing on the body....

You have no basis for comparison unless you try it :p

Harder than running a couple miles, then immediately doing 3 sets of 50 lateral hops(hopping side to side on a standard weight bench), then 3 sets of 50 hack squats(squat down with dumbbells and jump as high as you can) with 20 pound dumbbells? Not trying to brag or anything, that's my custom football conditioning I made for myself, and I seriously feel like throwing up while doing it.

Sounds tough. But as I said... try pilates or ice climbing and then come back with an authorative basis for comparison.

2 miles isn't much by the way. Let us not brag  I was just giving credit where credit is due.....

No, but 5 miles is. I'm trying to get it under 32 minutes, but that's ****ing tough. It's a conditioning only an olympian used, and he did even more than what I'm doing :o

So what do you do in pilates? I'm still confused

Wow- anyone wanting to tone up... this is the way to do it!

Two weeks in and I have my six pack back and have lost a couple centimeters around my thighs and waist!!

Deebroad- you are right, it does get easier and I now don't have trouble walking after we are pushed in to a full vagina-to-the-floor-split :lmao:

Ha! Sounds like you're having fun! :) What I didn't mention is it's also a form of kegels. So you get an added bonus there! I've actually heard of women orgasming doing pilates! Ha! Incentive enough for me! :) Haha!

yeah I've done pilates for a few years. I prefer yoga, though, because I like the meditative aspect.

I also approached this from a dance background, I did many years of ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance and in my teen years evolved into bellydancing (raqs sharki), flamenco and spanish folk dance (of course the infamous sevillanas, with it's coplas all over the place, I only ever learned 4 or 6 as I recall), and indian folk dance as well.

I love dancing. Back in the day I was a little break dancing raver, yeah I was a spazz all hopped up on uppers.

I have contemplated getting certified to teach aerobics so I can teach bellydance for fitness and fun here. I wouldn't ever want to have this be my main means of supporting myself but it is very fun.

My older sister started back in pilates after 3 kids and 5+ years. She was admittedly tubby. Now she's super fine and complains that a fat balding man ate her husband. maybe he needs to do some pilates. Something.

It makes me wonder how much instructors of this kind get paid... as it seems to be a very sought after activity (anything tagged with 'weight loss').

Does your mum do okay then Dee?

It's hard to get a man to do pilates, but it's damn funny to watch it! :) Ha. I tend to prefer things that are more fast paced, and I think the belly dancing class sounds like a blast! Wish they had one at my gym!

She runs her own semi-just-starting business, so with that aspect she doesn't always make out well. But if you work for a gym you usually make around 30-45 dollars an hour. But for her, it all depends on how many people show up. She charges about 12/class so she can make out pretty well if she averages like 8-10 people a class!

I'd say, unless you're really into it, it's a good second job.

Now that you mention it, a couple of the other dancers and I had a laugh about how when you do anything involving legs opening and closing, opening and closing... your physical response is to produce excess lubrication.

Pussy: "Okay- I'm ready and waiting... bring him in"... "Still waiting..."

:lmao:
