How Accurate are Performance Evaluations?

Recommended Posts

especially if they are done by evaluators who has rarely if ever work with you?

I received an evaluation that I believe unfairly underestimates my performance, and it's being sent to HR and the Exec Director in addition to upper management.

I evaluated by a supe who I've heard recieved a fairly poor evaluation himself just before he gave me mine, although I can never know for sure if this was a factor.

Would writing a rebuttal with supporting evidence of my work and sending it to HR be going overboard?

Usually, employees are required to sign their evaluations after they read them.

I would say you should most definitely write a rebuttal and let the company know that if your future there is to be determined by the evaluations of people who aren't even familiar with your work standards then you must re-evaluate the company. Let them know you've worked very hard, that your work quality is very good, that you are very loyal to them and that in return you feel you must be rewarded at the very least by some measure of appreciation, if not a nice token in your paycheck.

You have nothing to gain by remaining silent. If they don't take some sort of action after you've made your points, you should look for another company whose management isn't so short sighted.

It's not only your right to rebut the poor review, it's your responsibility. If the reviewer consistently gives underestimated reviews, then there's obviously something wrong with the way they measure performance.

Why did you wait until after the evaluation to point out how hard you worked last year?

When I have an evaluation approaching, I put together a list of my regular duties and any other assignments I've been given over the last year. I evaluate my own performance, listing my accomplishments, challenges and future goals as well as areas for improvement (everyone has those!). I then put a document together for my boss (or whoever is doing the eval).

The evaluator may see new areas for measuring your performance that weren't apparent. And, you both will know what is expected over the next year.

..and it works. I've averaged 6% increase per year for each of the last 7 years and negotiated an extra week of vacation.
