Update about the biking trip.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

2 days ago I posted a thread on what to take on a lng biking trip. I had great responses and without them I think I would have died. The idea of taking a break everyhour and getting high carb-energy bars was great.

OK so this is what happened. We started our journey at 9:30 am on wednesday morning. As soon as we crossed the Hamilton bridge, which put us on the other side of lake, we faced some serious head wind. I would have never thought head wind would be the death of this expedition. We biked until 6:30 where we came to a baby crawl due to the head wind.

The problem wiht head wind is that it shatters your mental game. You put atleast 3x more energy you would without wind and you go slower. My energy was drained by the time we hit the sign that said "Niagara falls 39 KM".

I threw my bike on the ground and have never ever felt the urge to cry in my life. The feeling of defeat and helplessnes is one that I do not want to feel again. I am a self motivated guy and when I gave defeat I wanted to breakdown and cry.

If we had road bikes, we would have definately would have made it all the way to niagara. The mountain bike + insane head winds + long boring roads brought us to our expedition demise. Next June I plan on making it to the Niagara and will buy a road bike for this purpose.

I will post up pictures soon, and I did not do this for weight loss I did this as a challenge for myself.

But I am still proud I did a double centure 220 or 240 KM in total. But man the defeat is killing me right now.

Really, you should be proud! I not only couldn't do it, I wouldn't even ever have had the THOUGHT to do it!

It's not a defeat. The target you set yourself was just a bit unrealistic. It's good to overface yourself slightly in any sport, but if you overdo it that's when the loss of confidence creeps in.

Whatever the target you were aiming for, you did really really well. Maybe next time you can set aside a longer period of time...bearing in mind that as well as giving you a sense of achievement, these things should actually be fun.
