Office Gossip

What is the best approach towards avoiding office gossip when coworkers attempt to lure you into it into a negative conversation about a boss/coworker the first place? Recently, I began a new job, and the biggest problem there is everyone talking behind each others back-when one turns away, they talk behind his/her back, then when another leaves from the crowd, they talk behind his/her back. Frankly, it's getting annoying. And from my experience, office gossip can cost you your job. What is the best approach towards not showing opinion on a boss/coworker when one/more present you with a statement or even a question about their mannerism in a negative way? Ideas, suggestions ?

well, when I use to work at this big facility. I would just keep to myself and stay focused on working. This would avoid me getting into big gossip groups. Stay busy and focused. If you dont want to make a bad comment just walk away and do something productive. You heard the gossip but your not participating because you leave. ha

Four women are sitting and talking. One of them leaves and the other three say: "Thank god she left, now we have something to talk about."

Unfortunately if you show them that you despise gossip, they may try to set you up for some crap. It's best to listen and stay positive. Yawn and say "What can you do? :)"

If they mention for example tennis in the gossip in some context, turn the conversation into a tennis talk, say: "Oh, I also wanted to take lessons in tennis, do you know any good school?"

The thing is: how you position yourself is how people will treat you. If you're negative about things yourself, you won't be able to fool them. If you're above them intellectually and refuse to gossip, they will resent you for being better than them. Either way, you're not in a good position. So stay focused on your job and don't be too meek with them. Be professional and show them that you're there to do your job, not to yap. Let them think that you're too boring for their "exciting" company. ;)
