SoCalCatman72
Ok, so I've decided to fire up my 24hour Fitness membership and use this winter to get in shape for next summer. And I guess I'm wondering what structure to work towards. I'm 6 feet tall, have a medium-large frame, and I currently weigh 170. I'm not fat, but I do have some tummy fat as well as some that seems to like to camp out under my chin and around my neck. Any suggestions?
Pink Amulet
Throw out the gym membership and get outside and do some real exercise.
Author SoCalCatman72
I do real exercise. I practice martial arts two to three times a week (50 min classes), but I want to build muscle through resistance training.
Pink Amulet
May I suggest climbing Rowing is also a sport that is fantastic to build arm muscle, and the rotation in your mid section and obleques will get rid of that belly!
Ross_K
Only you know what the best look for you is. Women, have different preferences in guys, some prefer toned and don't like ripped, and some prefer ripped, some even like guys who're skinny. I myself want to put on more muscle and get a bigger build, but I don't want to look too ripped. Anyway, the best way to look ripped if that's what you want to do, is to lose weight so you've hardly got any fat (since fat covers your muscles) and obviously work out heavy with low reps (around 6 to 10 reps)
blind_otter
I'm with Pink - I have always preferred men who have muscles from working and doing stuff. I really dislike the bubbly overly muscled "i work out at the gym" look. JMO, though. Some ladies love gym dudes. not me.
Ross_K
Throw out the gym membership and get outside and do some real exercise. Working out with weights is real exercise, in fact I've heard that it's the most healthiest form of exercise there is. Rowing is also a sport that is fantastic to build arm muscle, and the rotation in your mid section and obleques will get rid of that belly! Working out directly on your midsection will not get rid of the belly, all you can do is to do enough exersise to lose weight, and you'll lose weight everywhere.

Agreed. But think about it, which form of exercise will burn more calories? Rowing, or lifting weights in a gym?
Ross_K
Probably rowing since it's more aerobic.

stoopid_guy
Agreed. But think about it, which form of exercise will burn more calories? Rowing, or lifting weights in a gym? Going to depend on how you're lifting. High resistance, low reps won't burn that much, but they will increase your metabolism over-all. Low weight, high reps will burn callories quite well though. The important thing is to keep it interesting, and there's a much bigger variety of things you can do with a set of free weights than with any repetitive machine. Agree though, the most fun is outdoor stuff.
Ross_K
Lol. Damn, why have I gotta write more than ten characters to be able to post?
Pink Amulet
Yes, You aren't as focused on losing weight, or toning up, so you are more likely to be too distracted by the enjoyment to notice how hard you are working!

Author SoCalCatman72
LOL, interesting discussion here. My main thing is I want to boost my self confidence, I mean I look in the mirror and I'm not fat, but I just don't think I have that manly look, you know like what you see in the perfume commercials. the_alchemyst
I don't like guys in perfume commercials. Or guys with big muscles. Or with ripped bodies and stuff. (It's all about the arms and hands for me.) Ew.
Author SoCalCatman72
What do you mean by arms and hands? Like big hands and biceps?
blind_otter
I like carpenters. There I said it. They have awesome rough hands that feel so good on my smooth skin. They have these natural muscles, muscles that grew from being used to do something, rather than from the tedious repetition of weight lifting. The kind where, if you see them lift up something heavy, all these delicious back and abdominal muscles seem to pop up out of nowhere what a surprise! I really dislike effeminate hands on men, the really soft ones with no calluses. I mean I don't hold it against the guy, but I wouldn't let the guy hold it against me, if ya know what I mean. serial muse
as long as your skin isn't smoother than mine. and your hands are bigger than mine. i had a friend who went out on a date with a guy whose hands were smaller than hers. it didn't work out; it was a huge turnoff for her. poor smallhands brad. Guest
You have the opinion of two women with particular fetishes. I have fairly tender skin. IMHO rough hands = sandpaper = no fun at all. As for working out - muscles are muscles; there is no difference in muscle built at a gym versus muscle built lifting garbage cans into the crusher. It only gets fake looking when the guy gets into 'body-building' but if you know any 'lifters', they frown on body-builders and have no desire to turn their bodies into ropy masses of lumpiness. If you enjoy weight training, do it.
