How much internet use is acceptable?

I just read in another area of this forum that a woman's husband was suspended for porn on his PC. While I agree with that, can trouble be found by going onto sites like this at work? Disregarding the time spent, obviously if you've spent the entire day doing just this you'd get in trouble just like the guy sitting in a corner reading a magazine or doing a cross word puzzle all day. I like to keep this site up while I work and I look/respond between phone calls and doing admin work. It serves as a great little personal break. I don't usually leave my desk all day and this is the only recreation I have during it. But after reading about this woman's husband, it became apparent that all PC's are monitored centrally and I'm just wondering what people's opnions are. Aside from getting lectured, can more trouble come from participating here on company property? I always thought "no" because it's kind of like a self help/support group thing - but it's also totally not company related and personal use of a company tool.

Anyone know anything that relates to this?

I read a stat once that said the average employee personally surfs like 24 hours per month on company time.

I think that is excessive and as an employer if I found someone getting paid and wasting 6 hours a week I would be pissed.

I expect personal surfing and if on lunch and work breaks that is fine (nothing illegal or porno, but games email is fine) I am not naive enough to hink people are not gonna do it, so I would say that I might overlook a half hour a day. Beyond that I have to wonder.

When I was in the business of supervising a cluster of employees, this came up a lot.

My point was that if you're getting your work done, on time and in budget, then by all means surf away. No porn, obviously, but hey, if everything's getting done, that's cool.

I only had to give a warning to a person once because they were abusing the privilege, and after that there was never a problem.

It worked out OK because the rest of the employees didn't want to lose the privilege so they essentially kept the one employee in line.

i agree with SC..... gawd, i can remember how awful it used to be with out the internet!

at my co. they do not "check" your web usage, unless they have a reason to, and if they do they will tell us.

they do put blocks on racey stuff here at my work, i.e. victoria secret, some violent sites, prn.

and we are not supposed to down load things, obviously.

And who is to say i am not checking LS for something work-related?

anybody know where i can find 1200 cases of jumbo paper clips enscripted with the periodic table?
