Getting married in another country...

I just got a distrubing email from my friend. her fiance and her are desperate to get married. She is in school with me and she knows without a doubt she will lose her financial aid.

According to another friend of ours you can get married in another country to say your vows and such but it is not in the US so therefore you arent legally married and the government cannot hold this union against you if they find out.

Does anyone have any ifo on this? something about it seems illegal.

why even risk it? Why not just do something like a hand fasting or the like where they just vow to eachother and not do the legal part? Why can't they wait till they are out of school? Seriously this sounds like no real planning on their part and more of a "tru luv 4eva!" type thing

Thats what i said. I said if they marry in another country and keep reporting they are single here...what if someone finds out.

I kinda wanted to know if i was right before i discouraged it. I said something similiar to you...i said why dont you buy a ring for each other say vows or whatever and consider yourself married? they have been together for 8 years but never married because he is in med school to be a doc and she is half way through becoming a doctor. they still have about 4 years to go. just getting impatient I guess....

I didnt think it was weird to buy to rings and say vows without signing on the line. If they need to feel that signature thing i suggested writing up something between each other.

My parents were married in a different country and it certainly counts as legal here in the US.

As long as you get married by a legal authority and under the legal requirements of that country, the US recognizes it. I'll PM you a link.

Ah, here's a US government link - I assume that's ok with Loveshack rules:
