Anyone ever run a 5K race?

Recommended Posts

What makes you think my time would be laugh-worthy, you pink elephant, you??

Let's see now...it has been three weeks since your first post - and still no feedback. That's funny enough, isn't it? I have a huge arse, and yet I'm not scared of jogging for half an hour or so. Even if I have to knock a few trees down along the way.

Sweetheart, it seems to me I've received several bits of feedback, which were quite sufficient and helpful. I woudn't really describe my arse as huge by any means, and I have no problem knocking down a few trees, or knocking YOU on your sorry "arse," on any day of the week. ;)

How old are you anyway?

Sorry...I meant in terms of your time (I realise that you're not having any trouble attracting attention). Have you been "around the block" yet? I certainly have.

And stop calling me sweetheart. Don't mess with me.

Junior, I've gone further than that.

Fair enough. Don't mess with me either.

Im joining this thread late (maybe 'cause I wasn't even a member when it started.) I found the Cool Running website last week, bought a pair of real running shoes Friday, and will begin with the "Couch-to-5K Running Plan" starting tomorrow. I have talked about this for 5 years and am finally ready to get off my butt. My hopes are to experience some muscle toning with a bit of weight loss (is 10 pounds too much to hope for?) as my jeans are getting tight and running shoes seemed cheaper than a new wardrobe. People talk about the "natural high" and that intrigues me as well.

I had no idea that it could take 9 minutes to run a mile! I just turned 42 and knowing that will certainly make me feel better when it takes me forever to get anywhere at the beginning.

I'll try to keep my progress posted if anyone is interested....According to the plan I should be up to 5K in just 2 months. I live in Louisiana and the weather/humidity has recently let up enough that I think I could actually start. In the past (only once) I have done too much too quickly and given up in very short order. I will be running outdoors.

That certainly beats laps around the dining room table.

Ha ha. I love humor and you are genuinely funny except when you're being completely sincere!

I just meant that I won't be using a treadmill (too cheap, or maybe it's poor, to buy a TM or a health club membership.)

Keep the smiles coming!

  • 2 weeks later...

I run 5K's regularly. Norajane's times ARE fast - those are times of VERY competitive runners.

Most races will have an "under 27 minutes" and an "over 27 minutes" assignment. Just like Westernxer said, I believe 9 minutes is about average for most races, but so long as you're finishing within 30 minutes, you should feel good about your performance. :-)

As far as training is concerned, I'd recommend spending as much time hitting the pavement as possible... I find running on a treadmill - even with an incline - to be MUCH easier than race conditions on the street. HTH

I said I would post again about my "running" escapade, so here goes....

I did start the Couch -2 -5K program suggested on www.coolrunning.com and I'm now in my second week. Tomorrow will be my sixth workout, or in other words Week 2, Day 3. It is a really good program/running plan thus far. I barely made it thru the first day, second day, and fourth day, but the third and fifth days weren't bad at all. I expect tomorrow (the sixth day) to be pretty easy. I am still smoking a pack a day and am hanging tough, so it would have to be easier for a non-smoking person. My quit day is Nov. 27 and I am sure I can do it! Then I will really run!

I know my quit day seems far off, but I had to pick a day, notify everyone of the date (for support) and stick to it, so that's my date. My kids will be home all week the week before and I don't want to traumatize them with my negative feelings/behavior as I will be spending as much time sleeping and showering (non-smoking times) as possible the first 5 days or so until the nicotine is out of my biological system. I plan to go cold turkey as I am much too cheap to spend more on a non-smoking plan than the cost of actually smoking. I am absolutely more terrified of my mental system, which is equally addicted, but I'll worry about that as it comes about. And I plan to adopt the "patch" if it's just too difficult.

Running (or jogging, which is all I'm doing at this point, and at very short intervals to boot) is part of my "master plan." Thus far I haven't shed a pound, but I didn't expect to. Starting an exercise regime is just part of the "big picture." I'm not overweight by medical standards, I'm 5'5" and weigh 135, but that is not acceptable to me. I am sadly out of shape and "squishy" in ways I don't like. I addition to running, I also plan to change many other things. I have mentioned ditching the cigarettes, but I also intend to incorporate other "lifestyle" changes. I need to drink more water. I need to consume less alcoholic beverages (beer being my personal fave) and I need to consume healthier foods resulting in less caloric content.

Running a 5K seems more attainable than all my goals added up, but running a 5K with ALL my goals sounds even better. Please MAKE ME DO IT! I know I am the person responsible, but I am also very honest, almost to a fault, and I WILL be held accountable to anyone willing to call me on anything.

Kittiecat, I don't mean to highjack your thread, I want what's best for you and everyone. I just need people to make me accountable so here I am and I hope you will make me accountable too.

P.S. running on a treadmill is nothing like running on pavement from everything I have read. From my own experiences, running in cold weather (50's) is actually much easier than in warm weather (70's). In two short weeks I have experienced both in my neck of the woods.

I couldn't agree more... and I love that cold-burn and reddness of my legs after a super-cold morning run! :-)

DDL - good luck to you! :)

I think it's time I invested in some good running shoes. My back has been killing me lately.

And yes, the treadmill is easier, that's why I like it.

Thank you, Kittiecat. I bought "good" running shoes two weeks ago and I believe they are part of success. I spent $75 USD on a pair marked as $89.99 so I felt that I got a fair deal. I put the $40 shoe on one foot and the $75 shoe on the other and there was simply no comparison, although the $40 shoe didn't feel bad on it's own.

Good luck to you, as well. I like having as many running mates as possible and hope to develop a "love" for running. I'm actually counting on those endorphins I hear so much about, yet have not experienced. I want to feel compulsed to run. I really do.
