Pink Amulet
I am right now on 2 hours sleep in 49 hours. It happens when I am highly stressed mostly. I probably only ever get about 3 hours of sleep per night on average. I hear there are two types of insomnia, those who find it difficult to fall asleep, and those who find it difficult to stay asleep. Once I am asleep the only thing that wakes me up is my alarm clock quickly reminding me that it took me five hours of tossing and turning to sleep for four or five hours max. You would think I would be tired enough after days of little to no sleep to just drop straight in to bed right? *shakes head* I don't really believe in taking sleeping tablets. Any other suggestions or sob stories out there?

Any other suggestions or sob stories out there? I am a fellow insomniac. Its tough for me to fall asleep most nights. I either read something, or I go on a long walk and it usually does the trick. Whenever I can't sleep, you can usually find me on here during the overnight.
lovestruck234
My Mum has alot of trouble sleeping during the night....mainly because of her sickness and the pain. But even when she's taken pain killers, she still wakes up every few hours just because it's habit, I think. She came into my room at about 2am this morning and hopped into bed with me. She was crying cos of how sick she was. I turned over and looked at her and she said "Just be there, next to me..." and she slowly dozed off. It migt be a comfort thing you are suffering from?? She has to sleep on the couch next to the tv instead of in her bed she said because she has to get up to take her tablets and heat up her hot water bottle anyway and it's closer to the kitchen for her to walk to.... I know when I can't sleep I just go and watch some tv. It sometimes helps. The reason I usually can't sleep is because something is on my mind..... Pink, is there anything you'd like to share with us? Got any burning issues you'd like to discuss?
tanbark813
I've never had bouts of what I would call insomnia but occasionally when it's a little harder to fall asleep I've found that chamomile tea helps. I drink a cup of that stuff with two tea bags in it and a half hour later my eyelids are quite heavy. You could also try NyQuil but that might go along with your no-sleeping-pills thing. There's also the option of 6 shots of whiskey.
UnknowingOW
Dying for sleep here....however, I think it's because I was in Cabo San Lucas for 4-days of non-stop tequila drinking, suntanning, seeing Sammy Hagar @ Cabo Wabo, parasailing, blah, blah, blah.... Got back late last night, probably only slept 4-hours in the last two days....thinking how in the hell was I going to do any analysis today...yeah, didn't happen. They should tag Cabo like Vegas...What happens in Cabo stays in Cabo.. NEED SLEEP....
Art_Critic
Why are you so stressed ? Melotonin works great for me.. and sometimes a benadryl will kick off a tough sleep for me

Any other suggestions or sob stories out there? I have this (in bold type)when I'm highly stressed..........it's called Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (hope I didn't mix up the words). I once spent my whole vacation in the Bahamas (3 nights) awake, trying desperately to sleep. I agree on the sleeping pills...that and I'm allergic to them-they give me the opposite result. The only solution I found was to de-stress. But I also read that you shouldn't fight it..grab a book/watch tv/listen to music. Just lying there wanting to sleep exacerbates the problem. Jordan255
Three things worked for me: Taking the TV out of my bedroom, melatonex (melatonin), and valerian (probably the best for me). Valerian is a natural herb, and both can be gotten without a prescription. Also meditating to lower my blood pressure, regular excercise, etc. My stress was keeping me awake. I was getting like 4 hours of sleep a night. But now I'm much better!
johan
Valerian is good. A bit of alcohol is also good, but too much alcohol fouls up the quality.

Sparky
Hey Pink Amulet! I'm an insomniac as well, and I know some things that'll get you to sleep. Okay... First of all, before you even consider anyone's suggestion, you should go see a doctor. 3 hours of sleep is NOT good. I went to a sleep clinic when I was 17. I slept in a monitored room with a bunch of things stuck on my body to read the rhythms in my body. They discovered that I never went into level 4 sleep, which is a deep, deep sleep. LOL! It was kinda cool when they showed me the graph. They could even tell when I was dreaming! THAT WAS SO AWESOME!! After we reviewed my sleep patterns, they put me on a drug called Trazodone. I don't really believe in taking sleeping tablets. You will if you go on THIS drug. Trazodone didn't help me sleep, it PUT ME TO SLEEP! I am NOT kidding when I say that this pull will knock you out for the night. If you take it and even try to stay awake, you will feel sick. Just recently, I started taking Melatonin because the Trazodone alone wasn’t enough to get me to sleep right away. It happens when I am highly stressed mostly. I'm thinking that your self-esteem definitely plays a role in it. What are you worried about? One thing that will almost always cure insomnia is masturbating or having sex. I’m not kidding. I do it at least once every night before I go to bed (well… since I don’t have anyone to have sex with, masturbating’s kinda my only option, ROFL! ) For me, jerking off relieves a lot of stress, makes me feel better about myself, gives me a cardiovascular workout, and obviously… feels great. I could go on forever telling you how healthy it is for you. It’s even healthier if you have great self-esteem, because you enjoy it WAY better. I see it as rewarding myself. That’s my suggestion. Just look or grab something that turns you on, like porn, and go nuts! Or you could just give me a call and we’ll cure BOTH our insomnias… But seriously, you should look into it. Even though guys are wired a little differently, we're still the same species, aren't we? Masturbating is masturbating.

johan
Have you never heard of squeaking one off Alpha ? I think it's probably a question of scale. I often thunder one off. Depends what I eat though. I hope we're talking about the same thing.
the_alchemyst
Anyway, I've been dealing with insomnia for several years now, so I'm kind of "used" to it now. I don't know about you guys, but I think it is really frustruating sometimes (maybe I'm not so used to it after all, eh?). There will be whole days that pass by and I will not have slept in the slighest. After the second or third day it becomes really, really exhausting (for me, at least). It's worse when I actually want to sleep--you know, I'll be tired from the day's "work" and will want to fall on my bed and simply go to sleep, but I will just be entirely unable to. It sucks. Right now it's barely 2.15 AM, but I have class (and an exam . . . maybe I should study) at 9 AM. Sigh. Not being able to sleep is not really that much fun.
Author Pink Amulet
Wow, great response from everyone... except the gerbil discussion. Masturbation relaxes me immensely, but never enough to sleep. I am worrying a lot about the increasing work load being put on me by the lazy production team. Today for example I worked for 6 and a half hours without a break, and then went to uni for three hours, came home only to start a 4,000 word essay on the quantative, empistemology and theoretical approaches of a 42 page scholarly journal My ex is hassling me, my best friend is dying, and I worry that my next pap will come back abnormal. I also lay awake thinking about the state of affairs... obesity ( ), world climate, f*cking North Korea, and some various woes happening on this side of the world. My mind just doesn't stop ticking. I tried a shot of whiskey in desperation and I vomited Alcohol and I appear not to get a long. Thanks so much for every ones tips, and suggestions I may try this Valeriana as I assume it is natural. stoopid_guy
How much caffiene do you consume? Lack of sleep can really be harmful, talk to a doctor if it goes on too long.
Sparky
Wow, great response from everyone... except the gerbil discussion. Yeah, I was a little disturbed about the gerbil discussion... Masturbation relaxes me immensely, but never enough to sleep. I believe it all depends on what you think and why. For me, if I jerk off imagining that I'm having sex (getting a blowjob, touching them, etc.) with someone just because they're hot, I tend to feel guilty after I cum. However, if I jerk off imagining the same as above except focusing on making them happy, feel good, or anything involving love or strong affection, I feel much more relaxed. This isn't always the case, and I'm not the guru of masturbation, but don't you think it makes sense? I am worrying a lot about the increasing work load being put on me by the lazy production team. Today for example I worked for 6 and a half hours without a break, and then went to uni for three hours, came home only to start a 4,000 word essay on the quantative, empistemology and theoretical approaches of a 42 page scholarly journal My ex is hassling me, my best friend is dying, and I worry that my next pap will come back abnormal. Well it's no wonder you can't sleep. Nobody would be able to sleep with all that going on. I don't even think a prescription for sleeping would be enough. This is completely normal. I also lay awake thinking about the state of affairs... obesity ( ), world climate, f*cking North Korea, and some various woes happening on this side of the world. Okay, now THIS is just plain ridiculous. You're worrying about things you have absolute not control over. And by the way, I've seen your pic on your profile. In order to become obese, you would REALLY have to try hard to get there. You are incredibly sexy. My mind just doesn't stop ticking. This is just my opinion, but from the way you've described your problems, the obvious root to your insomnia is anxiety. You should talk to your doctor about taking anxiety medication. My sister is on medication for anxiety, and let me tell you, she gets SO WORKED UP that for example, if we all leave the house, she'll ask if we've unplugged the dryer because it MAY catch fire, despite the chances of it happening being unbelievably small. You're worried that something's gonna go wrong, and you're stuck on that. Ask yourself these questions before you start to worry: What's the problem if something goes wrong? Can it be fixed? What are the chances of it happening? What's wrong with making mistakes? Accidents are meant to happen, no matter how big they are and how or if they'll affect more than one person. There's no way to live your life without making mistakes because it's the mistakes that improve us. Whatever happens, happens for a reason. Just focus on the here and now, because I can guarantee that if you worry about something going wrong, IT WILL GO WRONG.
Sand&Water
REPLY: I have to admit, I worry about putting myself to sleep. I hate the sleeping process. I spend about 5.9 hours out of 6 hours tossing and turning at night. My bones; legs, arms, neck, and back ache all the time -at the same time. And, my mind travels about 1 000 miles an hour, as I never stop thinking, and stressing. It is pure torture. In addition, I'm sensitive to light and sound. Any kind of minuscule light or sound emitted into my room will always cause sleepless nights. In the end, I am able to deal with it. The funny part, is I always pretend to be asleep. Overall, I can sense and hear every word, and everything around me. Sand&Water
