Headaches, Hormones & Periods...

Recommended Posts

Women, on behalf of my wife, I am curious. Does anyone here get headaches around the same time as your period? Do you get them before, during, or after your period? What is your age...approx? How long have you had them...as in years or months? How long do they last?

And above all, what have you done that has worked to take the pain away? What hasn't worked?

Thanks for your help. No, there is no connection to our sex life...or lack thereof. :D

I do sometimes but I don't think that is the cause of them. I haven't really noticed. If I do then I just take what I normally take, advil or motrin and lots of it. Everyone is different when it comes to that.

It seems every 3 months or so I get a bout of bad headaches throughout my full cycle...meaning ovulation, PMS and the actual period. And those months suck!

What she needs to do is keep track of her cycle, and be aware of what she should/shouldn't eat. Tell her to do a food diary and keep track of her daily stresses, mark it down and see if a pattern occurs during her cycle. Certain days she will feel drained and not well, and on those days she needs to drink more water, take daily vitamins/minerals etc., and B12!! Load up on that!

I'm 35 years old, suffered incredibly bad migraines from 30-32. Yuk! Those years sucked!!!!!!!!!! (it was more than just hormonal, my father suffered from migraines, so I am prone to them)

And above all, what have you done that has worked to take the pain away? What hasn't worked?

I ended up seeing a Neurologist, who gave me Zomig to use when my migraines were really bad. All I could was sleep it off when they hit! I also used advil as well.

Exercise is important too, (sex is good!!) and once in a while if she can, drink coffee. Trust me on this one, her body will either crave it - and the caffeine will help the migraine go away or her body will reject it (for me I would, and sometimes still do, gag) and so therefore don't drink the coffee.

Definately get her to keep track of her cycles, that is the key and finding out what her triggers are. Is she getting enough sleep? Or too much sleep? Eating regular meals, and making sure her blood sugar level doesn't get low. This can cause migraines!! Another thing is finding out what foods she may be reacting to. A simple food allergy could help her find that out, and they'll (dr's/naturalpaths) eliminate the foods she reacts to and then slowly re-introduces them to see reaction.

Hope this helps!

I get the 'hormone headache' the day before it starts and now often one the day it ends. I take 8mg of codeine in an Aspirin, Caffeine and Codeine pill. Some days I have to take several (one every four hours per the instructions) and other days one will do the job.

I also try food, fluids, caffeine and chocolate. They aren't migraines, however I gather that for a lot of women, the cycle can trigger migraines.

Yep. I get headaches anywhere from a week to a few days prior to starting. Sometimes they will last right on through the period.I usually take advil and I'm fine. My hormones can get out of whack, and I become a little more emotionally unstable :lmao: such as I can cry at the drop of a hat, or get very grouchy! :lmao: I think it depends on the woman. Its different for different people.

no headaches, thank goodness, just cranky and crampy. And tired. It all happens a couple of days before I get my period and lasts through the first day or so.

not sure what to recommend for the headaches, though when I used to get migraines, Cafergot worked wonders. I've heard that caffeine also helps with the blood circulation in your brain, alleviating the pain somewhat.

Yep I forgot to mention tired. I feel very tired, and like someone has beat me silly. I eat pretty good and exercise, and I try to get enough rest. But for some reason for me around that time I just can't seem to get enough rest. Its always been like that for me. I have no cramps and and period doesn't even last that long, its just the crappy symptoms. Poor hubby, I think at times he needs to go check in a hotel for a few days. :lmao:

would B12 help pep you up?

Who, me? I take B50 (50 mg (or mcg) each of the Bs plus some other stuff) as part of my daily vitamin regimen so I don't think so. From what I've read, it's the action of estrogen on serotonin that's the problem. But then I typically have more energy than most people I know so me tired just tunes me down to 'normal' activity levels :)

I am 19 and on average (since it varies month to month) I'll have a headache a few days before my period, rarely during, and many times after> They usually last a couple days. Usually during my period I'm taking Motrin or Pamprin so I'm avoiding the harshness of every other symptom.

I'm guessing that I don't have headaches during my period, usually, because of the Motrin or Pamprin but I don't think those drugs are meant to help headaches so I don't know if I would normally have headaches during my period. Ibuprophen does not get rid of my headaches, I think because I used it for so long to take care of all my other period symptoms.

I heard from a couple different places that a lot of women have issues with their "drug of choice," during their period, because their bodies get sort of "immune" to the drug. It becomes less and less effective in treating those symptoms. This of course is a long term effect that happens over years, not months.

If she's taking something regularly like this, changing to a different medicine could help. I've changed from ibuprophen to store brand ibuprophen to now I switch between Pamprin and Motrin every couple months.
