SO from another country?

Recommended Posts

How many of you have a SO from a country different from your own? Culture clashes? Immigration woes? Just curious.

My H is from España....we're still waiting for the interview. My Spanish stinks right now, by the way. :(

I tried to post this yesterday, and I don't think it went through, but if it did, sorry for the duplicate.

My first husband was from Bangladesh and we wound up divorcing. Partly due to the culture clashes, but mostly because there were nights out that he was unaccounted for. He was very macho and abusive and I was the loudmouth American woman with a splash of hispanic ghetto that wasn't afraid to fight back, both verbally and physically.

Maybe with your hubby being European, you won't have the same problems as I did. I'd expect a bit of the macho thing to come into play once in a while, but it's not necessarily that way all the time with Spanish men.

All that matters is that you and Antonio Banderas get along. :D Good luck with the interview! You really won't need it because the questions they ask you are geared to find out whether you guys have a real marriage or not. Oh, and when you have kids, please let hubby teach them Spanish and practice speaking it in the home. In America, they will learn English soon enough and they will absorb both languages like a sponge. Trust me, Spanish was my first language. :)

My hubby is from South Africa, so I totally understand the immigration issues! We're working on that, now, but he's here with me on a work visa!

My husband is from Canada and we never did have any culture clashes because he grew up here in the states mostly. Although he does still does have his canadian accent what I just absolutly love.

My brother however dated someone for a while and she was a mexican and she didn't even speak any english really so it was fun to see them both trying to communicate. Yeah there was some culture clashes but they ended up breaking up because she was being deported back to mexico. Her main goal was to try and get him to marry her so she could stay here. Needless to say I got a laugh out of that.

Heh I have very mixed feelings regarding the marriage/citizenship issue. I know a lady that got married to a guy from Peru that had a wife and kids back home, but they wanted to move here. She was a single mom with like 3 kids and struggling. She got a pre-nup with him, he paid her 20 grand, they got married and he's staying with her and helping out with bills. He's been very decent with her, faithful to his "ex" wife back home, and helpful. They're helping each other, and she's frankly giving him a gift that's priceless, citizenship. He's grateful to her and is really a good friend to her. The situation has made me look at it differently and I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong with it.

I know the OP is in love and it's a real marriage, so please don't think I meant to imply otherwise, lol. :D
