Teacher's Pet
This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I was raised on music, and was a music major in college, until I discovered beer pong. In my studies, I've learned how music is used as therapy for the mentally challenged, and how it can even be used to calm wild animals. But...music has it's dark side. Music can also make us relive painful moments in our lives, and bringing bad memories to the surface, no matter how far they are buried. Thanks to being an over-sensitive fool, I have a LONG list of songs which can easily make me break down. I thought I'd share them with you, in case anyone comes to NJ to join me for karaoke, so you know what is OFF LIMITS. In no particular order: 1. "Always" (Bon Jovi).... it was my ringtone for my last gf. 2. "I Believe In You And Me" (The Four Tops).... our song 3. "Hello" (Lionel Ritchie).... first song we ever made love to 4. "Bernadette" (The Four Tops).... you figure it out 5. "Love Bites" (Def Leppard).... heard it tonight on my way out...I had to literally pull my car over on the Jersey Turnpike. 6. "Tears" (Rush).... reminds me of my first gf. 7. "The Rose" (Bette Midler).... reminds me of a past love. 8. "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" (Bonnie Tyler).... reminds me of my ex, "H". 9. "I'll Stand By You" (The Pretenders).... "H"'s and my song. 10. "Fade To Black" (Metallica).... first song I played on my old radio show after a girl I was seeing briefly dumped me WHILE I WAS ON THE AIR 11. "Silent Lucidity" (Queensryche).... makes me think about my kid. There are more, but these songs always bring out my worst emotional state. Does anyone else have specific songs that hurt to hear? And more importantly, am I the only moron who has most of them in his IPod, so he can force himself to listen to them and get angry? -tp smiling next to you
LakesideDream
Pet, you are an eccelectic sort aren't you?! While nothing makes me sad enough... or longing enough to actually tear up anymore... a few that make me "think, think, think" are: James Darren, "The Way You Look Tonight" (Rod Stewart's version isn't bad if you're a youngster). Van Morrison, Brown Eye'd Girl, (that one's the ex) John Stewart, July You're a Woman, with a bit of the original Daydream Believer by the same writer thrown in. The '60 Monkee's version is just a hoot.
burning 4 revenge
When I hear old Spanish ballads and sad Cuban boleros I get that melancholy feeling. Throw a few drinks in there and leave me alone in a room to reflect about things past and present and yeah, the potential is there. Those kinds of songs trigger memories that take me back to my childhood and those are the most dangerous memories. I treasure them, but I almost despise them in a way, because theres something haunting about childhood memories isn't there? You see people who vanished, dreams that vanished, beliefs that vanished and yet they still exist in your mind and seem almost tangible. If I hear one of those songs, I don't hear something from Cuba like my grandparents might have heard, I hear a party going on in a Spanish ghetto apartment somewhere on Chicago's northside. I'm probably building a fort made of pillows, or hiding under a table so my cousin Peter wont pull my hair again and the Christmas tree is lit up and right next to it are the Three Kings, the traditions of the new country and the old country being honored side by side. All the adults are talking and laughing and they're loud and my father is probably arguing politics again and he can't understand why some of my mothers family want to replace a Communist dictator with another Facist dictator. Everything smells like pungent garlic and my grandmother is crying, because my cousin Peter is breaking things and his parents are hunting him with a belt, but he's running around hiding places and we're all waiting for my grandfather, because he stays in his store late everynight to catch the late sales. Even Christmas. And everyone looks so, so young...especially my parents. All the while its those old Cuban boleros playing in the background. Already nostalgia, but other peoples nostalgia. It wont be years until I realize its mine too...just different.

Guest
While some songs have memories for me, none of those pain me. I think I'm very good at getting over relationships. I still like the songs because they're good songs. But there are several songs associated with nothing in my life that get me every time. Landslide by Stevie Nicks. Dixie Chicks' version is good but something about Stevie's version grabs me. There's also A Song for You by Leon Russell and In My Life by the Beatles. And a whole raft of classical pieces - one especially even though it's 'only' A. L. Webber and not Bach or someone - Pie Jesu
lindya
I haven't done the total wallowing in misery thing for ages, but on the last occasion I can distinctly remember bubbling in angst ridden fashion to: Say Hello, Wave Goodbye - Soft Cell Everybody Hurts - REM Creep - Radiohead and (most embarrassingly...) Wake Me Up Inside - Evanescence PS - I love your post there, B4R, Very evocative.

Touche
Ok, I'll throw in mine. One of my big ones is Billy Joel's Piano Man. It just brings back a flood of emotions from my 20's. I always related so much to that song. Also, Elton John - Don't let the Sun go Down on Me California Dreaming by the Mamas and the Papas will always remind me of my very first boyfriend. Ok, these are really corny/cheesy but Cats in the Craddle and Cat Stevens' Father and Son.

SoundedPlum
"I'll Be There" version by Mariah Carey... I heard it while I was driving yesterday and I just started to cry because it reminded me of my ex. "Broken Vow" by Lara Fabian... this song has been played MILLIONS of times in my iPod and really helps me through bad times, even though it's a really sad song.
johan
I'm a guy, so songs don't really make me cry. Nothing does. I internalize all those kinds of emotions, and instead I make fun of stuff. But that song Eric Clapton made after his kid died kind of gets to me. I don't really like to hear it. But it doesn't make me cry.

Anything Nickelback...(His fav. while we were together) Anything Simon and Garfunkel, Dave Brubeck, Natasha Bedingfield, and Christina Aguilara...(used to fool around, cuddle, kiss, plan, talk, and dream to these artists) How am I supposed to stay away from Simon and Garfunkel? AriaIncognito
Banana I think you and I have the same ex. I can't hear nickleback without thinking of him. A few other currents ones that kills me are Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Lips of an Angel by hinder. They remind me of him for various reasons/moments shared. In the past, there's been tons of songs. More than Words by Extreme comes to mind. One song that made me bawl back in high school was "never say goodbye" because I think I was close to graduating and was hating the fact that life was about to change so much. I still remember that moment when that song comes on. Some things that make me happy....any song by Rockapella. I can't listen to them and be sad for very long.
