I brush and floss regularly so I was surprised to wake up with a mouth full of swollen gums all the way around. I can barely brush my teeth because my gums are so sensitive.

I can't figure out what has caused this, if it is from stress and a poor diet? I haven't been getting much sleep plus not eating too well and drinking a lot of coffee.

I do take Vitamin C and drink OJ, see the dentist and all that so I can't figure out what's going on. It has come on suddenly and is my entire mouth. Even some of my teeth feel a bit sensitive. I'll make an appointment with the dentist Monday if it has not healed by then. Any ideas what this means?

The two most likely causes are infection and allergy. Either way, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. Gum disease is usually in distinct spots so if the gums in your entire mouth are swollen, more than likely we are talking infection. I don't see how an allergy would spring up all of a sudden.

Please let us know what the dentist says about your case.

If you want to learn more, Google "swollen gum cause" and you'll have more than you can read in one night.

try either listerine/ and or warm salt water, just swish it a few times aday and see if that at least helps, until you can get into to see the dentist.

I never thought about an infection but I did the Google search and it could indeed be from a virus, metal ingestion, malnutrition and a host of other causes. Now for sure I think I will see the dentist and let you all know what he says. Even the roof of my mouth and sides of my mouth are all swollen.

LB as far as Listerine, I do use the antiseptic Listerine, also I use bleach strips and my toothpaste has peroxide so maybe I am killing any healthy bacteria in my mouth? I just got some yogurt with natural cultures in case that helps and eating it with pineapples which have a lot of Vit C which is supposed to be good for gums.

Next I'll try the salt water rinse, good idea. So thanks everyone. I was about to ignore it until it went away.
