Rewind
I'm at a job I hate..and a dead end one. I've been outta college for a few years and took this bc it was the only one offered for me. I'm the office goefer aka office assitant at a law firm and from day one people asked me dont u think ure overqualifed for this job especially since I have a degree. Anyway my boss told me during my interview that they like to promote from within but I'd have to be there at least a year..low and behold I'm there a year and a half. During my annual review he started knit picking saying I scared him once bc I asked how many copies he needed and I should have known the first time then went on to say how I need to be walking around going from office to office asking who needs help...while his assistant sits on her ass all day on the internet or the rest of the staff who spend 90% of the day gossiping and spreading rumors. So I tried that and got wierd faces from the attorneys and them just telling me there's nothing to be done. So 4 times already there have been open paralegal positons and each time I got passed up. My boss told me he considered me but after me asking him about the copies it scared him..RIGHT. I know..as well as he that I am capable of doing the work. So 2 times he's hired outside people all who quit within months. I know the real reason is office politics and 2 women attorneys who never speak to me except when they need something done prob have had a say in me not being promoted. The real kicker is a girl who worked there 2 months was promoted to paralegal bc she became friends with an attorney and bascially kisses her ass and follows her around like a puppy dog. Once again a paralegal is leaving and the day she gave her resignation my boss said he was putting an add in the paper. I know I will never get promoted in this place for watever inside reasons and am starting grad school next month (not for law) anyway so have decided after the holidays to put in my resignation letter. I get no respect, actual work (not making copies), am the lowest paid person, have realized that to get ahead in my office u need to suck ass and be phoney and see no reason in vegating at this job and looking like a smuck to booth. Am I doing the right thing?
jerbear
short answer yes. A law firm is an "up or out" type of organization. One either makes partner or goes away. Even Ivy grads get cut at that level. Gophers, paralegals (w/ or w/o certficates), really have no long term future in that type of organization unless the firm is national where there is an career path. When you start grad school, look for something in your area of study.

I've been sending out resumes since the summer and went on about 3 interviews but no luck. I have rent and as soon as I mentioned this to my family they went nuts saying I have to stay and can't quit lol. I know I have to do what makes sense though and have money saved and plan on going to job agencies, temping, watever till I find something else
jerbear
It is easier to get a job while still being employed. Are you moving into a new area for grad school? Right now, just go with the flow and still pursue other job leads. You will meet people in grad school who can lead you to a new job. I do not know what your economic situation is but there is always retail? Not talking about seasonal help more like sales associate. Temping is not bad but not a stable future. Can you get a paid internship related to your grad degree?
Author Rewind
No..my grad school is local in my area. I'm getting my masters in education so I really can't start teaching till I'm done with the program and am licensed. Yeah I would even consider working in a store just as long as I'm out of this godawful place:sick: . I've been contemplating quitting since June but have always been talked out of it or just didn't have the guts to go through with it. I even have my letter typed and save on my computer since the summer.
rina_r
I am in the same situation: been for 3 yrs at my job, hate it by now bc it became boring and not enough challenging, but provides good benefits. Plus, I am in school (MBA - useless....), do not really know what I want to do, and will move out of the area in a year or so anyway, so everyone tells me to wait till the end and then leave.
