I think I might be in trouble....

Recommended Posts

Hi all, please tell me what you think of this situation (i'm so sorry if it's a bit lengthy, please bare with me). I work at a supermarket and today was our company party. I was scheduled to work today but yesterday I told someone who was of higher authority then me (but not my manager) that I didn't want to come in for today. Well, 7 people had called in sick today and I get a phonecall in the morning saying that people are looking for me at work! What?! I told the girl of higher authority that I couldn't make it.

Just a little background, this girl sometimes gives me trouble and I hear from many co-workers that she is not that well liked, for many different reasons (mainly she is very condescending, rude, etc). Well, she had told other co-workers that I never told her about not coming in. I couldn't believe it! I also heard from someone that the assistant store manager was very upset about all those other people not showing up. And that the assistant store manager wanted my manager to talk to me about not showing up.

Well, when I heard that message on my phone I called into work right away to explain the situation and ask if I should still come in. As it turned out they were very short staffed and did need me so I went in. When I got there I confronted the girl about what she had told the others (in a non-threatening way--I tried to remain calm--as though I took it seriously but tried to play it cool as though it didn't freak me out). She says, "oh I thought you were joking about not coming in" HUH?? How is that a joke? I believe she did this to me on purpose to get me in some trouble. I take my job seriously and I don't slack off, so this was very troubling to me.

Well, later on the assistant store manager sees me that I had showed up and confronts the girl, he seemed somewhat confused. The girl says to him, "oh I dunno I guess she decided to show up". I suspect she is very crafty and clever, she knows how to manipulate people (this is my impression of her, and a few other co-workers have described her this way). I really hate confrontation and try my best to get along with everyone, so this really freaked me out, I thought I was going to be in a lot of trouble. Just a side note that is not really important but I think i'll say anyway is that I really like our assistant store manager, he's very nice to me and we have some things in common (I'm interested in him, but that's something entirely different...)

I'm sorry for all this but to my question, what should I do? I never got a chance to explain myself to the assistant store manager, should I talk to him directly and explain what happened?? I also don't want to seem as though i'm bad mouthing the girl, she's been there a lot longer then me. Until this point his impression of me was that i'm a hard worker (co-worker said that to him about me) but i'm afraid this incident might have tainted that impression now. Should I explain myself?? I'm so scared to talk to him, what should I say? How do I start...like "______(insert his name here) can I talk to you about what happened on Sunday?" I believe the next time I see him is on Tuesday. Or should I not talk to him and hope this gets forgotten?? Thanks so much for reading!
