Feeling not at home?

Recommended Posts

I'm still young and I believed or assumed I found myself and know who I am and where I want to be but things are changing, as I think I've hit an epiphany in my life. But regardless I somehow feel that I've fallen a slave to society.

For the past week I've been feeling out of place. Finishing my 7th semester in college, im close to graduating.

I've lived in this city for most of my life, I know it inside out that I can probably be a tour guide. It's a great melting pot here. I've always assumed that I'd live and die here. But for a strange reason I feel as if this isnt where I belong, or this isnt my place nor home.

It's possible that I'm bored here. Even if I did traveling to elsewhere such as Europe or Asia i dont think I'd find what I'm looking for. I think subconsciously I desire some form of change. Whether It's me, the people around me, or environment I dont quite know yet.

I'm sure I have much more exploring in life to do, but where do i go from here?

Sometimes when you look around you and see plenty, but can't shake the feeling that you need something more, it can often mean that you may have too much. Maybe you need to explore and appreciate the smaller things. It could also be wanderlust. Maybe go on a vacation somewhere new and get some perspective. Hope that helps.

When you start looking for a job after graduation, look for one in a different city, somewhere that captures your imagination and where you think you'd like to try living.

I think we feel this throughout life. We know who we are, and what we want, but as we age, and we accomplish those tasks, we're forced to reevaluate what we want in life and figure out new ways to grow as a person. Otherwise we'd just become stagnant and bored with life.

It makes sense that you'd be feeling this closer to the time you're about to graduate. You are about to finish your "school" years and will need to transition into "adulthood" and you have some important decisions to make. But dont feel overwhelemed because no matter what you decide you can always make a different choice in the future if it's not what you want.

And it's very possible that you are right. Moving to another city or traveling might not be the golden egg you are looking for. In fact, I think more often than not, when we're lost, it's more about finding ourselves again. Finding new things to challenge ourselves, new things that will force us to grow spiritually rather than achieving a specific possession or task. However, trying new experiences is one way of bringing us back to ourselves, if we use the opportunity wisely. It's all about reconnecting with the universe and opening your eyes and appreciating the present moment. Seeing new things sometimes helps with that. But you dont necessarily have to go to a far away place to be able to reconnect with yourself.

I was going through something like the OP some years ago. I'd gotten to the point in my life where I had a great condo, a great job, a nice little life, and yet...I kept wondering is this all there is?

I chose to move across the country to find myself, and that was partly because I'd never really lived anywhere but the city I was raised in. Went to college there, grad school, worked there after school.

I needed that kind of adventure, a big change, and it really did bring so many new experiences into my life. It made me see myself in different lights under circumstances I could never have imagined.

I agree, though, you don't always need to go elsewhere to reconnect with yourself. I actually moved back home so I could do that.

But definitely try something new! Stretch yourself, consider things you'd never consider. You will surprise yourself with what you are capable of doing and being!

See, you reached the point where you did all the growing you could in your current situation. To get past that hurdle, you needed to find something that would challenge yourself again and give you another direction to grow. When you traveled, you were ready to see the world with new eyes.

I just went through something similar, but it was due to a divorce. I too had reached the peak of having a great job, nice little life, attained almost every single goal I had set before me, yet miserable as hell. The divorce forced me to view the world with new eyes.

So far my city has the most job opportunities for my field and most resources for finding jobs in my field, compared to other cities. I think I might have let that reason hold me back by exploring other such possiblities elsewhere.

I did some traveling with friends to london a year ago. I can imagine living there one day as it's almost a second home.

But again, it's back to personal interests VS. job interests...

The question pondering is, do i go and live where I want to be even if it has little job opportunities compared to elsewhere? Or do i choose a location of job opportunities over a place I'd rather live?

I think we feel this throughout life. We know who we are, and what we want, but as we age, and we accomplish those tasks, we're forced to reevaluate what we want in life and figure out new ways to grow as a person. Otherwise we'd just become stagnant and bored with life.

its true i'll be graduating soon and i will be taking drastic steps to make changes that I am prepared for. I dont feel overwhelmed because I look forward to it. this past year, i've been applying myself to reach those goals. I see adulthood no different from where I am today. I see the true test of adulthood is getting married and having children.

As for complicated decisions in the coming year, I do have it planned out. I'm 90% certain it will follow through, unless unforseen obstacles manage to stop me in my path.

what gets to me is falling into a routine i wont be able to pull myself out of after graduating such as the 9-5 job or commuting home-work. Yet at the same time I look forward to moving on with my life, getting school done and being well off on my own with my own means.

And another question pointing back to me is, do i do as much traveling as i can before i try to settle and find that 9-5 job with benefits. because i might not have the same opportunity later on in life.
