Hi There,

I am moving to a new home in one month. I leave my home and move in my new home on the same day. Its been 17 years since I've actually done a move so I was wondering if anyone here can pass on some helpful tips.

Like how soon should I book a moving company? [no-more doing it yerself] and what should I pack and what services do movers have?

All advice appreciated.

Thanks

Book it as soon as possible! And make sure you use a well known and respected moving company. Do some research on it, ask friends/co-workers for some recommendations.

There are various movers who do EVERYTHING, some who just move the boxes, funiture and whatever else like rugs, etc...I think that is the norm. Are you looking for a mover to pack your things as well? The more $$ the more they will do.....

I suggest collecting boxes now, even go buy some bins with lids. They're cheap depending where you go.

Oh and bubble wrap for your valuables. Glasses, dishes etc or just use newspaper.

Good luck on the move!

  • 2 weeks later...

Our movers packed every single thing, except they wouldn't do valuables or perishables and certain things like aerosols or chemicals. Easiest way to do it is pack everything room by room. If your new place has a bigger kitchen and you have some things for your kitchen that are stored in a closet, either put those things in the kitchen for when they pack or explain for them to write "Kitchen" on the box.

Declutter your drawers and such ahead of time. They will seriously pack everything, even garbage that is in the garbage can. Washer/dryer they had to have someone come in and unhook it, then they packed it. Then when it arrived someone had to come separately and rehook it up. Liability I guess. Then when it's moved into your new house, they'll put the boxes right in the room that it came from (kitchen to kitchen, etc), furniture where you say, etc. If they take anything apart they will generally put it back together when they set it back up. The did pictures and wrapped them up carefully. Only one thing of ours broke, the corner off a griddle. No biggie.

That's how it was for us anyway. It's pretty heavenly. I have no idea how much it cost, though. Company paid it. Oh, they all expect a tip. I wish I had done more decluttering ahead of time because unpacking junk is annoying.

The company we used was Armstrong Relocation, if I'm allowed to say that here. They were good.

RE:

The above posters made excellent points. Definitely, be well prepared. Anything can happen.

In addition, do extensively research before settling with a company. There are several companies, out there, that can cause severe fraud -and sham you out of your belongings. Be careful!

IF you have expensive jewelery and/or antiques, safely pack them into containers or boxes and deliver them yourself via car. Don't leave anything, such as that, lying around.

Do understand, movers get paid relatively little for such hard work. They can steal anything, so don't think it is unheard of -and believe it or not, they are good at it too.

Have a safe move!

I have some advice...

Think about what you need for the first three days or so at your new place, and pack that in boxes/bags that you will make sure you keep track of. It's horrible to get somewhere and need a medication, for example, that is packed in any one of a lot of boxes. I also included bedding. Include the things you need to make a meal (spagetti is good) and/or some snack food if you think you'll want it.

If you pack your own stuff, it's a good idea to be really specific in labelling boxes. My ex moved recently, and I would pack things and write "books from living room bookcase" or "photos and knick-nacks from mantle" or "clothes from yellow room dresser" on the boxes so that when we were looking for the roll of tape that was in a certain desk drawer, we just found the box in the room with the desk stuff and then looked for the one marked "contents of top left desk drawer." Of course, I'm really anal. :) He would have just thrown it all in the back of a pick-up...haha. But he seemed happy with the work I did.

Don't pack stuff you don't want...use this as an opportunity to donate/sell/give away some unwanted items. It's annoying when you have a lot to unpack to find that box of clothes you never wear. If you get rid of them now you don't have to pay to move them, and you don't have to waste time unpacking. Plus, your new place will be so nice and organized with less stuff!!

Take your time and unpack right. Clean the new place as you go if you need to. Don't rush through just to get done, instead give careful thought to how things should be organized so you don't move your old mess to the new house where it becomes a new mess!

If you are moving far, make sure you take everything you need for several days with you. I have heard of moving trucks being days late before...that would stink if you didn't have clothes to wear while you waited!
