It might be easier to approach her if she doesn't hate you or anything. also, how open were you guys with each other? Did she find it easy to confide in you? If so, she might not be as reserved about sharing her news, but then again, I can't imagine wanting to talk much about a serious disease like cancer with others. Your best bet is to contact her, and just be casual and friendly with her. If she feels comfortable with you, she will let you know what's going on in her life.
