I'm kind of clueless.. but have done a little research on the web. What are Amphetamines that can be purchased legally in the US? Are there any? Would those pills called 'yellow jackets' have amphetamine in them? (I'm not going to use them, but need to get some answers.)

I know this isn't a medical community, just asking for peoples understanding of the drug and availability in the US.

If a drug test came back showing amphetamine use, would it mean Meth? Or could it be something more benign? like those pills they sell at gas stations? Are those all caffeine based now? Caffeine isn't an amphetamine is it?

I thought they took ampetamines off the market in the US.. but I don't know for sure.

Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know about all the amphetamines that are available legally with a prescription but some of them are

  • Dextroamphetamine Sulfate
  • Dextroamphetamine Saccharate
  • Amphetamine Aspartate Monohydrate
  • Amphetamine Sulfate

It depends which test is used AND how accurate that test is. False positives are common in some tests and must be verified with a more expensive lab test to be considered conclusive.

A person using Meth would test positive for amphetamines.

Yes, caffeine is not an amphetamine.

Regarding those pills they sell at gas stations...some might cause a positive result in an initial test but those results would have to be verified by a more expensive test to identify the amphetamine in question to be considered accurate or admissible in most courts.

An ingredient (ephedra) in yellow jackets can cause a false positive see

[The false positive reaction of the Triage panel drug-of-abuse by herbal drugs ma-huang (Ephedra sinica (Ephedraceae))]

There are things they sometimes put in some other over the counter things that will give a positive result for amphetamines but are not, in fact, amphetamines.

May I ask why you are asking?

Assuming you said yes I could :) , why are you asking?

Maybe we could help you decide what to do with that information?

James,

Sorry for perking your curiousity and not sharing more info, but I jumped to a really bad conclusion from something my bf said. I didn't feel comfortable discussing it at the time..

I talked to my bf about it, and I'm embarressed in how far I jumped in my conclusions. And now I don't want to discuss it because I'd have to admit I'm a paranoid psychotic gf who jumps to bad conclusions. :p

Anyway.. false alarm. We're good to go now.

(Thanks again Craig, for the feedback and help.)

The over the counter Sudafed contains amphetimines too. In California you have to have a drivers license to show you are of a certain age (not sure if 18 or 21) to purchase it. It's popular among teenagers for a cheap high. Dr Phil had a show on it a couple of days ago showing people highly addicted to it and had a guest whose young son had died from overdosing on it. I think Tylenol has come out with a similar version in its over the counter sinus medication.
