lindya
I would wonder WHY he's not asking. There's always a reason when they don't ask. And that would be enough to put me off from marrying him - who wants to marry a guy who is hesitant about asking? I agree. It's easier for a man to ask, because although he's risking rejection he's at least backed up by various traditions that decree the man should ask for marriage. If a woman asks, she's taking a double risk. The risk of rejection, and the risk of being ridiculed by other people - and the man himself - for going against tradition/looking desperate. That makes it a brave action of course, but there have got to be more worthwhile uses to put one's courage to than asking for the hand of a man who has proved too lukewarm to ask for yours. lindya
can you see some dude going to her father and asking for her breast in marriage... My father's response would be something along the lines of: "Christ almighty - have any bit you want. Just dust her off and see if you can't squeeze a kid or two out of her before the hot flushes begin."
Okeydokey
agree with milvushina on this one. i think the whole engagement ring, 250k wedding, bachelorette party, bachelor party, engagement party, rehersal dinner, bridal shower, dress fittings, taxedo fittings, invitations, bridesmaids, maid of honor, best man, engagement pictures etc. are a capitalist rip off and some of them are quite sexist traditions (especially the engagement ring and the proposal bit). here is my ideal. we are committed to each other and have economic stability together. after a few years the subject of marriage comes up (after having lived together for a couple years). we agree we both want to do it. we head to the steps of city hall w/the closest friends and immediate fam., send some invites on color copy paper to the potluck at my house. that is my dream wedding. if some dude went to my dad to ask for my hand in marriage, he would be like "WTF are you talking about?"he would be so insulted... i
Woggle
My wife proposed to me out of the blue and I accepted it. She didn't have a ring but she asked me to marry her. I told her the condition she needed to meet for me to agree to marriage and almost a year later we were married.
