Pregnant and unhirable???

Recommended Posts

I love my job, but it's a contract and I finish on Feb 2nd. The thing is, I am preggers and due on June 20th! I really have to work as late as possible as I can't afford not to...BUT I just can't see how anyone is going to want to hire me when they see my bump. And yes, it is too big to cover up!!

I was hoping to get rehired to do the next season of the show I am working on now, especially as my boss was pregnant for the whole season!! BUT although I am overqualified for my job and did well at it AND was popular with the rest of the team, she hasn't made any noises about asking me back and keeps kind of procrastinating. Meanwhile I hear her on the phone locking everyone else down. I feel like the last kid to be picked for the basketball team! I seem to be constantly taking two steps forwards and one back. I know that there is always some kind of sacrifice when you have kids, career-wise, unless you are up there at the peak and can dive straight back in, but in my profession it's hard to ge accepted back in even after a short break sometimes. I love kids and I love my career so I'm feeling glum and a bit scared as well.

I want to look after the baby for two years without working and by the time I have the baby that should be OK because my partner is trying to get a better paid job so that I can do that. I don't want to just throw my baby at a sitter - not that it's wrong per se - just not what I want. BUT I really want to go back to work after and I will have to start again from scratch after two years!!!!

I didn't have this with my first child because I was only 26 and in a staff job and then we were all laid off and given huge payouts when I was on mat leave o it was a dream come true. Still - it did give my career some knocks, altho it was worth it.

Anyway - the more pressing problem is - what am I going to do if I can't get hired in February??

Were do you work, what type of work do you do? I am not sure of your religion but you should have faith!!! Pray!! In life you have struggles to see a brighter day.

If you have to apply for Admin/Recp Office jobs to make ends meat! Until you find something in your field. I use to work contract, temp-hire (never went hire) assisignments. It got so bad every job I had was contract!

Overtime I got tried of temping so I stop applying to temp ads and stop all commucations with temp agencies and only appiled to full-time perm position.

I don't think this is much help but I remember when one of my sisters friend was noticably pregnant with her first child, she worked full time in a shop called mothercare until her child was born. So don't lose hope about people not hireing you because you are pregnant :)

I like to give sunny, positive posts/advice, but I don't think I have anything positive to say. The business world is engaging in contract employees more and more for the benefit of the business and certainly not the employees. I would be concerned, as you are, because they probably don't want to sign you to have to replace you in a few months. You say your boss was pregnant. Did she deliver her baby yet? If so, did she return after a minimal maternity leave? If you have voiced your desire to remain at home for 2 years with your child (which I personally think is desirable when it can be accomplished) to anyone within your team I think you're screwed.

I also think it will be difficult at best to find short-term employment in the event that your contract is not renewed. It may not be impossible, but I do believe it would be difficult.

I certainly understand your need for income until the very end. Maybe someone will have something more positive to offer as a solution.

Good luck with your income, and congratulations on your impending bundle of joy!
