RecordProducer
Obviously I know what kind of jobs I can get in the music production area, but I am interested in other possibilities as well. I have a bachelor's degree in business administration (marketing was my major). I have a one-year experience in the administrative and secretarial field. I speak Russian fluently and not so well French. I know this sounds really poor, but I still want to know what I could do with it. I am not a bad typist. So other than selling bread or cosmetics and pumping gas, do you have any ideas as to what kind of job I could find? I don't even know how to look for a job here in the US. But I have to start making money, cuz I feel really useless like this. I can still do my music after work. Thanks in advance.
princessa
Well I don't know what typical jobs the marketing majors end up in.. But what you coud do is go on a site with job postings (monster.com or something), look at the job descriptions and see which jobs you could be qualified for.. The more you look the more you will become familiar with the idustry keywords for your search.. That also helps for embellishing your resume.. I remember a friend of mine was in marketing.. I think she ended up with an internship for a marketing firm.. she'd produce and publish broshures.. Other than that I don't really know..
quankanne
since you live in a metropolitan area, there may be opportunities for work as a translator. My first thought is to check with the chamber of commerce, because those people have the low-down on what's going in the community. Other thought is working with a paper, especially one whose readership is geared toward an audience that communicates in Russian – iffy, but definitely a way to put your language gift to work! Or even try an alternative paper, which is generally geared toward three segments: news, food and music. Most big cities have them, because they do a more indepth job covering the music/entertainment scene than a traditional daily paper. would a temp service be out of the question? I know in this part of the state, it's really the only way you can get hired in a position that doesn't focus on asking "Would you like fries with that?" best of luck to you, RP
Author RecordProducer
Princessa, thank you very much for your idea. Right, I can look for an internship in some company and start from there. It would be a great way to learn something concrete and get professional connections. I will do that. would a temp service be out of the question? I know in this part of the state, it's really the only way you can get hired in a position that doesn't focus on asking "Would you like fries with that?" I didn't get this last paragraph, but you gave me a great idea with the paper example. I love journalism and I could start from there! Thank you! I have all my posts on Loveshack as a proof of my writing skills. best of luck to you, RPThanks to both of you, girls.
pricillia
RP... If you like to read Monster.com is more than just a job rescource it has career advice as well... As Princessa stated that is a really great place to start.
Storyrider
Oil and gas related services might be interested in your linguistic skills, as there is a lot of drilling the US does in Russia. I don't know if they would have offices based in your area, though. You might also want to check the federal govt.
Curmudgeon
If you speak Russian fluently (and I assume you do) you could also start your own business as an interpreter, especially for the courts. That will require certification (a test) but if there's a reasonably sizeable Russian population where you are, the courts pay well for those services, as do other businesses and such agencies as social services, mental health and the medical profession. I don't know why but I don't find it attractive to use my languages as the basic profesional skill. My mom used to be a translator from/to English and German and Russian to Serbian and Macedonian. I don't like translation. Some people think it's challenging, I think it's boring. I've done it before. Ok, I got enough ideas, but I wonder if anyone can come up with something new. Gimme some stupid idea, like the most idiotic thing that occurs to you.. I'll probablt love it, cuz I am a weirdo.

You will have to work weekends but so what? That's where the fun bunch is And most bartenders actually want to work the weekends. That's how to bring it home. Oh ~ can you make a drink? johan
I'd hire you to hang around my office and look pretty. Not that you probably don't have a good mind, but I don't care.

Out of question. Absolutely not. I'll think about it. How much money are we talking about? By the way, why fon't you bartend? It might be worthwhile. Scholarship for your kids? I'd hire you to hang around my office and look pretty. Not that you probably don't have a good mind, but I don't care.I good frine dof mine, a producer, told me "There are many audio engineers, but studios might want to hire a cute chick as an engineer." So you got a point. Maybe. I want something more permanenet, but you guys definitely have some great ideas. I love them ALL.
erika2610
If you're looking for something just for now, you can make alot of money waitressing or bartending. I had a blast waitressing..
Author RecordProducer
If you're looking for something just for now, you can make alot of money waitressing or bartending. I had a blast waitressing.. Hm... If I decide to take an internship, certainly making some money at night would not be a bad idea. It sucks to depend financially on your spouse. I can spend as much as I want, but I feel like a worthless piece of sh*t. I gotta do something. But I want to choose a career beside my music, something more serious than bartending. But that's not bad either if I just want to make money. Thanks.

Well maybe if you want something just for now, while you're looking for something more permanent and serious. The money's excellent, and it's a great way to meet people. I met all kinds of fun, great people waitressing.
princessa
I don't understand why you don't get a job in the music industry?? Maybe start off with an assistant position or something? If you already have some skills in that domain and couple that with your marketing degree you could become pretty marketable. Why are do you insist on distancing yourself from music-related jobs? Why are do you insist on distancing yourself from music-related jobs? That's a great point, Princessa. Distancing myself from the field where I am best and have the skills and talent, might make me feel even more miserable if I get myself in a job where I am incompetent. I'll think about what I can do. In any case, now I have an arsenal of ideas to start with. I still need a lot of information about the music job market. Thanks again, Princessa and Erika and everyone.
