51% of Women ARE "single" in USA

Recommended Posts

New study says that 51 percent of women are single - it is PRETTY interesting. On NPR they said that we tend to be better at making friends and happier. Also, the longer a woman stays single the better she is at coping with divorce or independence after the death of a spouse.

This article and radio news show made my day.

Yeah that is depressing. What about the men?

I think married men live longer than single ones. I've heard that before. Also the quality of their lives is better while paired up.

Maybe they got it wrong or something? I don't see how if it works for men why it wouldn't work for women too?

I always thought that if some women were single for too long they became a little anal at the thought of coupling up. They get too set in their ways and can't adjust to having a roomie or something.

They push men away subconsciously even though they may very well want someone special in their lives? But they can't adapt. Or shift their thinking.

Kind of like a vicious cycle of sorts.

But hey what do I know? It's only my observation afterall. :)

The research I have seen uses a key word UNMARRIED as opposed to SINGLE. There's a big difference there.

Also, they included widows and since women generally live longer, the numbers will be higher.

Personally, I think they need to do a study that incorporates TRUE single women, those who have never been married or had any children. I don't think those that have been divorced or widowed should be in the same category. They have different life experiences that will alter their opinions from those of us who haven't even got up to bat yet. Those divorced women may be happy single because they had a bad marriage, or they have children to fulfill them... It's also easier for mothers to make friends, because of their children's activities. JMHO

Hmmm, I fail to see what's sad about this. As long as the women are happy with being single, what loss is there to mourn? Obviously many singles aren't happy being single, but then many marrieds aren't happy with their marriage.

But yeah, i think the article should see if women's happiness levels have increased or decreased over time and see if there's any correlation. Because ultimately that's all that matters.

And yeah, I think because women are economically self-sufficient, they're pickier about what they will or won't put up with in a partner...

the majority of the truly single women are probably under 25 and over 50. Both are out of my age range. There aren't that many single women in their 30s and early 40s.

In addition, at any single point in time most people are either married or in a relationship which leaves a very small percentage of singles, especially in the prime age range.

I've found that when I've been single and wanted to date usually someone that I think is cool turns up sooner rather than later... Anyway, with respect to age that is not so important - after all what matters is that you get along, right?

To an earlier poster -

Oh as far as getting set in your ways that is pretty true from what I have observed of some people, but I've also seen those people get over the hang-ups they developed being single when they met someone that they really liked...

Depressing or not? posts -

Definitely not depressing. It shows that women are more self-sufficient and independent. Now it is not about getting married/involved bc you need the financial support or because strong social norms say you must (even if you don't want to) - instead it is about getting married at your own pace and on your own terms.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty cool. Most people do get married so no need to be depressed about being single. lol.
