Exercise, healthy eating, and weight

This is in reference to my g/f's sister. She wanted me to ask this to see if anyone knew what might be going on.

 

Her sister, has always ate right, fish, grilled chicken,veggies, has always exercised, cardio, toning weights, yoga, pilates etc. She drinks lots of water. She has always pretty much been health conscience.

 

She is in her early 30's and I understand sometimes when hitting the 30's that metbolisms might begin to slow down some, but even as much as she eats right and exercises she is still bigger than what she used to be. I know we can't always be the same size we once might have been in high school, but her sister used to be pretty skinny and small built, but now shes, thick. Thick is the only word I know how to describe it because I wouldn't say fat, because shes not, theres not rolls everywhere in other words.

 

She has a son who is 8 years old, and she was even skinny looking while pregnant with him. She didn't get big or gain all over like some, she was pretty much all belly or baby rather. I guess my question is, if she eats right and exercises like she does and has, why would she be still be kind of bigger? She has had her thyroid checked and nothing seems to be wrong with that. I think my g/f is just kind of concerned for her, because she sees her sister trying her best to do the right thing, by continuing to exercise and eat right but not seeing any results, and her sister has expressed herself she wasn't sure what it might be either. Anyone have any ideas?

well your metabolisn changes after you have been doing the same thing for a while. So she probably to ramp up her exercise. Like do sprints or a different type. Also is she getting her heart rate up to the right level?

 

Plus when you again you eat less because your body changes so maybe she hasn't made the adjustment for that.

I agree. Your weight plateaus when you do the same thing for a long time.

Coupled with metabolism slowing down..

 

She should get a personal trainer they are great for introducing diversity into workouts.

Thanks hotgurl. She always is on my g/f (her sister) about how my g/f needs to change up her routine, so to my knowledge she changes up her routines some, and she does high impact cardio so I would think her heart rate would be up there, but not sure.

 

I feel kind of weird posting in here, kind of like mostly women post in here? :confused::p

It's something worth talking to her primary care physician about. Get a physical done, rule out thyroid problems.

maybe she should sit down with a nutrtionist and look at what she eats. Plus even though she is eating healty food it is still possible to overeat.

 

Have her journal down her food for a week and than a professional can look at it and tweak it. She should also note her exercise how much & how often as well.

How often does she exercise?

 

I know you said she drank lots of water, but how about carbonated drinks? Does she have alot of them as well?

 

Its good she is eating right, but SOMETIMES its not always what we eat, but how much we might eat.

 

Does she snack? If so is she eating healthy snacks?

 

Also, genetics can sometimes play a role. Does she have family memebers, like her mom or a sister or brother who have a tendency to be big? I'm not blaming it on genetics, I'm just saying sometimes it can be a factor, but it can be worked around.

 

If shes pretty much doing what you say, and her thyroid has been checked and ruled out and its not that, then is it possible she isn't eating or exercising like you all think? I'm by no means saying she isn't, but if she is drinking lots of water, eating veggies, and the good stuff, changing up her routines and doing high impact cardio, and there seems to be no medical reason, then she should be losing at least something or toned up.

 

Maybe since you say she is "thick" maybe its muscle mass? Maybe theres alot of muscle mass built up? Is that what it looks like?

 

Then again might be best she consults her doc to rule out anything else and a personal trainer might give her some better tips on what they think might be gong on.

Also it always amazes me how when you start writing stuff down you realize your not doing as well as you think.

She should see a registered dietitian to determine her Calorie needs. Although she may eat healthy, exercise, etc etc...a lot of people eat more than they actually think. It's all about Calories in, Calories out.

 

Also, in terms of exercise, if a person hits a plateau, it's a good idea to get some variety in the routine, such as working at different heart rate zones (such as higher intensity exercise sometimes) as well as adding resistance exercises such as weight lifting or strength training.

The metabolism does radically change exactly at age 30 and it kinda leaves you not prepared to fight against it. You eat the same, but gain weight.

 

It's not what you eat only, but also how much you eat. She needs to eat less.

Go on bodybuilding.com. They have all the info you need for working out, sculpting your body, supplements. Its not just for hulks like me who is 47 now but works out hard every day. Great site with lots of into and inspirational stories.

Age or sex is no excuse. Its how much effort you want to put in. During our Physical Readiness test twice a year in the Naval Reserve I pound the twenty and thirty year olds.
