Depression Meds?

A dangerous question.

It depends on a lot of factors, whether a med will / will not work. Sometimes another med, for the same complaint is much more effective than the "best" med. If you are the one who has a prescription, you have to try yourself.

No I wasn't given anything.

I do fall under the depressed area but I'm not on anything. That's why I was asking. Didn't know that if I requested something if it would work or if it would make me dependent on them. Which I don't want.

The problem is, no med is 100% effective - and quite a few meds are contra-indicated if you are diabetic, pregnant, suffer from high / low blood pressure, et cetera. What works for one person can be dangerous for another. People without a medical / diagnostic background may say X is a better drug than Y, but that does not mean X would be the better drug for you.

Most meds can be addictive. And again, there is no easy formula to determine whether or not you would get addicted to it. Most importantly, get a proper diagnosis. The meds may work wonderful, but if it is a winter depression, you would have "cured yourself" in two months anyway, without the meds. You may miss out on more effective treatments as well.

Don't rely on lay-people for medical information.

I work for a Dr's office...and I've been on a couple things myself...I only stopped them because I wasn't patient enough to wait for the annoying side effects to go away (diarrhea, insomnia, might happen for first few weeks of therapy)...but the first thing you need to do is visit your Dr. to see exactly what kinds of moods you are having...in some cases, people might need "an upper" of sorts and others have depression but also have mood swings along with anxiety...some of the meds don't exactly make you feel "happy", but just regulates your mood somewhere between that "depressed" feeling and "happy". I don't want to name any products here, but certain meds have a pretty low chance of dependency, however they should be discontinued gradually in the case that you want to stop them.

Weight gain is a common side effect as well...wellbutrin is popular as an anti depressant because, supposedly, it's also an appetite suppresant. Like I said though, it's best to discuss your options with a Dr, in order to decide what might be best for you.
