Rude Awakening

In middle school, high school, and my first second, and third years of college age, I've been approached and/or crushed on by some of the best-looking guys and/or popular, high fashionista guys I've ever seen even when I was dressed in baggy clothes, wore absolutely no make-up, wore my hair back...or down. However, I would shy away from them because I wasn't confident about them meeting my family or my looks head-to-toe. This kind of situation was repetitive throughout school years and junior college. I am good-looking in the face (no I'm not bragging, just stating the general opinion on my facial features) and have generally had a nice body, but I have never worked on my look whatsoever, and it got to the point where I really didn't even shower or wash up before going to college classes (because of depression, hated being hit on, fed up with family, etc.) Now, I actually want to go for the full force great diet and fitness makeover (I was in a healthy weight range, just had some flab under clothes) but no make-up and artificial styling just because I like to keep natural.

ANYWAYS, my point is why do some of the most obvious things that society pressures on us reasonably intelligent people does not seem to kick in until much later when we're incredibly starving for them? When other pre-teen and teenage girls were talking about makeovers, the cutest celebrities, etc. and boys were talking about banging and dating girls, did I not succomb to try to makeover myself so that I could be confident enough to accept invitations? Well, I know one reason only: because it wasn't as if I was surrounded by cuties of both genders in high school, they were quite rare to find, so I figured I could slack off in the looks department. But other than that, I don't know and I deeply regret.

Some people are late bloomers and don't get interested in that sort of thing until later. You obviously weren't ready for relationships, so did everything you could to keep people at a distance.

Plus, if you never had to try in order to get attention, why bother? It's like the brainy kids who can pass all their courses with A's without studying...they never actually develop good study habits, and then it bites them in the ass when they hit college and can't keep up.

Ask your girlfriends for help with the clothes, hair and make-up. Everyone loves a good makeover!

Well, being one of those girls that, when in junior high and high school, I experimented with make-up and BANG in college went wild for fashion - I can tell you to go to the basics.

Cosmo has great make-up tips (any of the girly-girl mags do) so buy a few and play in the mirror with different looks. Just remember it isn't war paint - you want to enhance your features and preserve a natural look. That's what is most attractive to most men anyway. Plus it'll help you still feel comfortable not "made up".

As far as fashion, well, you have to find what you like and what you think looks good, and is comfortable. Take a friend along shopping to help with the "looks good" help at first so you can start to see what compliments your body, etc.

Great that you are getting into an exercise routine because that'll help with how you feel about yourself too.

Good Luck To You!

Yeah, I was interested but not passionate, and the whole dating/hooking up/sex activity was one of the last priorities. You're right about the late bloomers thing and how it can all bite us in the ass when we reach an epiphany stage. I regret not working on something so obvious...grr...I'm stupid.
