New book.....old message.

So, the book The Secret is big right now. It must be if I have heard of it:laugh: Anyway, there was a program on Oprah about it and I read a review of it.

It is good to read motivational stuff. The thing is, if you have been around long enough you begin to realize that there really is nothing new under the sun. So, gotta admit to not having read the book but the info about it doesn`t get me racing to the bookstore.

There is a point in life where motivational reading all says the same things. Getting clear on what you want, thinking positive, creating a plan, believing it is already a reality, utilizing a higher power or the force within, becoming immune to negative people and on and on. All good stuff.

It just has to be said again in language that people understand. What I see is the language is becoming very complex, wordy and a lot of fluff rather than saying it simply. People often seem to have to believe it is a new system, better than anything before.

So, by redefining simple concepts into methods that seem to have an indentity with our rather complicated lives, it seems to make sense. Uncluttered minds can understand simple concepts, but complicated people must be charmed with complex methods. With much esoteric concepts. We feel we have secret knowledge;)

Thus.....The Secret

I've seen clips of "The Secret" and I watched a panel of those who are in the DVD on Oprah, and I think "The Secret" is no secret. Most of it is either common sense, such as positive thinking and action, and a lot of it is new age babble.

What annoys me about it is it places all of life's problems on the individual. Sure, many of our problems are the consequences of our own thoughts and actions, but some of them are not. The idea that by merely thinking about what you want, and "aligning yourself with the universe", you will eventually receive what you want is totally crap. Are all of the people dying from disease, starvation and war in Africa and other parts of the world dying because they didn't think hard enough about not dying? As someone else wrote: maybe they just didn't have the money to buy this crap.

Millions of men masturbate while thinking abou their fantasy women, but how many of those actually have that babe appear at their door?

I'm not saying the idea of positive thinking is false, but i'm also saying that it's a little simplistic and sounds to me like a marketing ploy for them to make money off of people. If it helps your life, great, but I still find the DVD annoying as hell.

(Gee, you're a regular romeo. Glad it's working out for you.

Anyways, good luck with your masturbation and all...maybe you should try masturbating while thinking about spelling next time. )

To add on about The Secret DVD and the capitalistic motives of the creators: One of the gurus who are featured on the DVD charges $250 for seeing him give his motivational/spiritual talks. My friend's mother really wants to see him but she can't afford to dish out that kind of money. If he really wanted to help people, don't you think the people who need the most help are the ones who can't afford the $250?

while I masturbate about spelling and grahmar u should masturbate about math because money doesnt grow on trees and this guy is obviously out to make a proffit, doctors help people and look how rich some of them can get... Its an ilogical arguement to point out the fact that he makes money to put down the motivational benefits... so hows ur motivation these days, u been doing ur thing... or have u been procrastinating and putting things off... just curiouse

Thats true. anyway not too long ago i saw a portion of the video through the web...bunch of hogwash...You could be watching that video for 2 hours on end, and they would still be repeating the same concept repeatedly using different examples just to get the point across.

But back to what you were saying, using esoteric concepts would probably do better convincing to the average realist/pessimist VS using straightforward words. Straightforward motivation works on the average optimist...you tell that to the pessimist, they'd be sitting on their arses all day long playing the self-victimization role.

It just goes to show most people need to be amazed and surprised to actually get off their ass and do something with their lives...at least doing something with themselves to make something happen in their lives.

That's why charismatic leaders exist and the majority of people are just followers.

Ouch. Let's be nice and retract our claws.

Sorry if my jab at you insulted you, KMT, but I couldn't help it. You have a valid point about doctors. They provide a vital service for lots of money. Heck, some doctors probably enter that profession for the bucks and not for the satisfaction of "helping people". The difference is, I'm willing to fork over money for something like my health, and I don't need to pay $250 to hear inspirational and motivational talk when I just have to look at the people in my own life who inspire me.

P.S. I'm not procrastinating. For example, I've read two novels in one day for my English courses, which was my goal for the day:)

to monkey00: I totally agree with you.

I also find it ironic that we're discussing motivation while sitting on our asses in front of the computer. *hangs head in guilt*
