working hard vs. over-doing it

Recommended Posts

With the weather getting nicer, I'm starting to think about summer clothes and how i'd look in them. Truth is I'm not too happy with my body right now. I'm still carring around that extra 15 lbs from college (I was a size zero when I started!) and I want to lose it and feel 100% confident again.

I'm not fat, my bmi isn't too high but I need to get in shape and lose a few pounds. So, I'ce started eating healthier, really cut down on beer and started working out.

My question is this; I am not a patient person, when I decide to do something I want the results right away. I'm in decent cardio shape and can easily stay on an elliprical or tredmill at the gym till I burn off 1,000+ calories. To me it seems like if I eat 1,200 healthy cals a day, burn of at lease 1,000 at the gym I can accomplish my goal quickly. What I'm not sure about is, what is too much? I want to work hard and do this but I don't want to over-do it or hurt myself.

I don't know exactly what overdoing it would be, but I wouldn't push it past your current plan. How are you burning 1,000 calories on the treadmill? Are you running 10 miles uphill? :D

I was told my my PT that a half-hour worth of cardio before working out is the right way to go and you should limit your working out to 4, maybe even 5 days a week.

Take advantage of your nice weather. Do you rollerblade? Thats an excellent form of cardio.

That and continue to eat healthy and you should be ok.

eating 1,200 calories a day and burning off all but 200 is lunacy.

your body needs way more calories than that to sustain its vital functions. your heart, kidneys, liver, brain and skeletal muscle will be fighting over those 200 calories, and none will be getting enough. it's grossly unhealthy to put your body through this and if you do, you will be working too hard and very seriously overdoing it.

The missing calories will (or should) come from stored fat.

If you were a size zero when you started, you don't need to be this extreme or you'll feel fatigued all the time or get shin splints, whichever comes first.

I was told that you should do an hour of exercise a day. I can only manage 5 hours a week but always start out with the intention of 7 hours. Reduce your portion sizes, eat more vegetables, limit fruit and fruit juice and switch to diet everything. Something may say low-fat on the label but they've usually compensated for the fat loss by increasing sugars and the energy hit will be more dense - so always read the food labels.

Do some light weights - they'll tone you up and increase your metabolic weight while at rest.

They just say that so that your muscles have time to rest and develop. I wouldn't know the actual truth behind it, since I never did exceed four days a week, mainly due to laziness.:o
