Mistaken Identity

The title says it all. I'm attending Arizona State University, majoring in English. I'm so self-conscious attending classes with the beautiful young girls. I want to drop out at least once a week. I'm trying to take as many online courses as I can. But there are some classes that have to be taken in person. Any suggestions for feeling less conspicuous? Thanks!

Be proud of yourself and screw what the younger kids think.

My Mom went back at 48-50 to get her BA degree in Nursing.. She had to quit school when she was real young and go to work as an RN because us kids came along and she put off getting her degree till we were all well grown and older ourselves..

She would talk about how her professors like and respect the elder students much more because they are there to learn..

In my experience, many of the younger students enjoy talking to the older ones. It's all in your friendliness and confidence level. Be friendly, be confident, and don't inadvertently treat them like they're children, and all will be fine. :)

If it's primarily a commuter college, you're in even better luck because most of those students work regular jobs and lead a more adult life than the ones living in a dorm room. You'll be able to relate a bit more to them, and they to you.

Congrats on going back!!!!! :D

Have you considered maybe starting at a JC, or a school that's less party-focused? UofA, or NAU or something? That might ease the transition for you.

ASU isn't a commuter school.

I agree with Art though - when I was in college, I really enjoyed the variety of people in my classes, which included "the older" crowd. You'll bring a refreshing, mature perspective.

Again, congrats on going back!!!!

Don't sweat it. I have older people in all my classes and I like them. Its cool to hear insight from people younger, the same age, and older than me. Its a school. Everyone is there to learn and get a degree, so no one is any better or worse than anyone else.
