Author luvtoto
Lack of motivation is another sign of ADD, my parents Always said that I was lazy in one form or another, get tested. I am so glad I am motivated now. I just got done painting my son's bedroom. I've put that off for two years! Then, BAM! I felt motivated! Since I started the meds, my house has been very clean, too. I don't put things off like I used to. Don't even feel like I am on meds.

Did you get it prescribed from your GP? Did he test you or just treat you based on your symptoms? And how do you distinguish it from depression?

Author luvtoto
OK. I might have to try this stuff. Did you get it prescribed from your GP? Did he test you or just treat you based on your symptoms? And how do you distinguish it from depression? My family doctor (who is very good at listening), asked me an hours worth of questions. He went back to my childhood, growing up, marriages, school, college...blahblahblah. I guess from what I told him, he could tell. He told me that there were three components to ADD. Impulsiveness, innattentiveness, & constant movement. My symptoms were racing thoughts, poor sleep patterns, can't sit still to concentrate, unmotivated, impulsiveness ALL throughout my life. This is a disorder that we have ALL our lives. What else? Poor grades in school even with a high IQ, poor relationships with people, bf's, husbands, coworkers. Also, baaaaaaaaaad memory problems. He then said that for a person without ADD, their brain kicks into a task quicker. My Dr. gave me a scenario: Teacher: "ok class, it's time for math. What is 2x2?" Person without ADD says, "4!". The person with ADD thinks, "Math?...hmmmm, math. Where is my math book? What page did he say?............2x2?.....uhhh....4!" There is just a pause in your thinking pattern. You just can't get it together quickly. If I had a quarter for everytime I've ever said, "Um. um. um. um....." I would be a rich woman!
Sup
I can testify to that, except the memory thing. There are also different levels of ADD. Such as, for some people the meds really don't help them, like my little brother, I feel for him! Then there are others who are able to overcome it without meds, and live pretty normal lives. Author luvtoto
Just wanting to add something. I have been weaning myself of my anti-depressants, because of my new ADD diagnoses. The symptoms that I thought were depression my whole life, were actually my ADD. Inability to focus, concentrate, procrastinate, anti-social behavior, relationship problems, memory problems, short temper, blahblahblah. I always thought I suffered from a chemical imbalance. But, never really felt depressed. I am a generally happy person. Just didn't know why I felt the way I did. Just posting this information to help anyone else out there. Luv, I would be VERY careful about that, have you talked with your Doctor about going off those other meds? It could prove to be very dangerous, be careful.

Sup
Well, If you really do have depression, going off the meds may be trumatic, you know bad thoughts, (suicidal thoughts) inability to function. But, like I say, I would check with your Doctor just to be on the safe side. After all, you don't any more problems, than you already have. And, of course, we all would miss you, not trying to be flattering of course, but just considering you health. I know of someone who has depression, when that person even had a change in the meds, it messed with that person. The persons getting better, but, has a way to go. No need to suffer. Outcast
I was wondering is ADD and ADHD something that people are born with or something that develops because of some reason? Most people are born with it, however injuries to the frontal lobes can cause the same kinds of symptoms that people with AD/HD have, which is how they figured out that AD/HD is a problem with the brain. Here's some excellent links for info on AD/HD (ADD and ADHD are not the same; not everyone has the 'H' - hyperactivity - symptom). www.add.org www.pediatricneurology.com/adhd.htm http://www.Chadd.org http://www.amenclinics.com

Over the last year I've been cutting down on my medicine already. Mainly because I have no health insurance, and I get samples from my doctor. A 30 day supply will last me a over 60 days. So, I am already taking less than half of what I should be taking. So, to go completely off it, isn't too far away. But, yes Sup.. I will pay attention to my moods. Author luvtoto
I think I have add also. I' haven't been to a Doctor yet but i have all of the symptoms. I found this site http://www.oneaddplace.com/add-test.php and took the add test. I relate to alot of the questions. Any thoughs? The reason I finally went to see my doctor was because my friends were concerned about me, and quite frankly, I was tired of being teased about my memory problems. They meant no harm, because I am the type of person that can laugh at myself. But, enough is enough. I felt as if I was losing my mind. Early onset of Alzheimer's...seriously. I was getting scared. I figured, if I am this forgetful at 39, what will it be like at 60?? Just in the last four years, my ADD symptoms have worsened. So, if your symptoms are affecting lots of areas of your life, then you should definitely go see a doctor about it. I am veeerryy glad I did.
lamar_84
Thanks for the advice. When I was younger i didn't have as short of a attention span as i do now. Most of the symptoms I have now i didn't have before. I guess going to a doctor would be the best thing.

Author luvtoto
What types of ways are their to get rid of ADD besides Medication? Get rid of ADD??? I don't know how that is possible. I think a person adapts to the disorder by incorporating skills. I for one am very organized. I have to be. If I am not, I won't remember appointments. I won't remember anything. However, my life had reached a point where it was getting unmanageable. My work was suffering, my home life was suffering. Luckily, the medication is working wonders for me. But, I still find myself resorting to my skills. Never realizing how much I used them before. Just think, you can save alot on your car insur- OOPS! I mean Coffee! :lmao: :lmao:  :D Sorry, I couldn't resist! That's hilarious!!!! :lmao::lmao: 4 smilies for that!
lamar_84
Is there any books that can help add rather than using meds?
RecordProducer
I have it so bad, that I can't remember faces of people I talked to a few days ago. I always have a problem remembering people's faces (names I remember much better). Otherwise I don't have ADD symptoms such as thought racing, but I am a little bit impatient and find it hard to focus when I am bored by something.

Author luvtoto
Just found out today that I have been approved for free Concerta medication through the company's patient assistance program. I have no health insurance and couldn't afford the appropriate medication, until now. One month of Concerta is over $100! I am thrilled!
