kitesurfer
i wish i had found this thread sooner. my stepson (now my x stepson) was diagnosed adhd. I WAS SO AGAINST THAT! i was convinced that his situation was purely situational and a lack of discipline. he was hyper--and also curious, energetic, inquisitive---the "all boy" syndrome. i loved that kid to death the way he was! but he literally got kicked out of more than one day care and kindergarden for his behavior. time out had no effect on him. someone--my MOTHER IN LAW- convinced her daughter that the kid was not normal and being a retired school teacher, she KNEW WHAT NORMAL WAS! the dr diagnosed him adhd. he started with ritalin and then moved to adderal. HIS PERSONALITY CHANGED immediately as the drug digested!!! while medicated, he had nothing to say. he sat like a knot on a log--no movement, no reactions, no laughter, no conversation. he turned into a complete opposite of ALL BOY. he was quiet in school, he quit interupting conversations. he was no longer my best pal, my best buddy, my partner in crime. he didn't want to play ball or do anything outside as he had before. he would rather read and play video games. my greatest fear is that one day he will get off the drugs and not know how to function in society after having been kept stoned his entire formative years and virtually locked in his bedroom. he has been gone from my life now for a year and 12 days and i miss him teribly. PLEASE, someone tell me that i was wrong and he will survive.

I am not going against the doctor's advice, but I have researched the few ADD drugs available since I was diagnosed. All I know is that I have not heard one good thing about that drug yet. There are safer drugs available with less side-affects. My doctor didn't even consider that drug for me, because of the danger of taking a drug so strong. I would get this boy a second opinion from another doctor. This just doesn't sound good to me.
kitesurfer
i wish i could get a 2nd opinion. she left me just over a year ago, and i'm sure part of the reason was the child. i was so adamantly against the diagnosis/drug regimen that i think she felt her 'control' was at stake. but my heart still hurts for that boy!
